This can't make up its mind whether to be primarily an English-Italian dictionary for English people; or an Italian-English-dictionary for Italian people. Ultimately it ends up being neither.

The English-Italian section is absolutely fine...as are the 'Lexical Notes' outlining such useful area as weights/measures; the calendar; spelling and punctuation etc that divide the two sections.

Where it starts to go wrong for me is the Italian-English section, with big key explanatory chunks written in Italian - ie to help Italian readers get to grips with important English terminology. This diminishes a vital area of the dictionary's use.

At the end of the Italian-English section, there's another very useful ... Read More:

This dictionary is very good value for money, and fine for most purposes, but I have found its vocabulary limited when working with some very mildly technical areas. Also if you don't have a basic knowledge of Italian, it isn't a lot of help with word endings etc. - there is a list of regular and irregular verbs in the back, but this is very concise and of limited help. For example, if you know no Italian, and look up the word 'vieni' you won't find it, and you don't know that you need to look under 'venire'.
I guess most users will probably have some basic Italian, and would find this a useful and adequate, lightweight and small paperback dictionary. For anyone with no Italian and/or a need for moderately specialist or technical vocabulary, ... Read More:

I am currently doing a intermediate level of italian but find it always useful to remember the key verbs. I have used a lot of italian books in order to understand italian and this one explains and does what it says ''drills'' those verbs into your mind with a good set of exercises. A well organized easy to understand book perfect for beginners of Italian! I would seriously recommend it.

I am really impressed with this Dictionary. Besides the general layout, which is incredibly clear, it has every word I can think of in it! An unmissable aid to Italian language students. In the centre of the dictionary is a section giving invaluable aids such as numbers, dates, times and even examples of job applications, references, complaints for bad workmanship etc. It is Simply the BEST!!

Written in a sloppy and thoughtless style. E.g. On page 5 the learner is introduced to two sentences: 'Seals love to play' and 'Bats are mammals.'
This is redolent of the infamous nineteenth-century travellers' guide which offered 'My postillion has been struck by lightning' as a useful phrase to memorise.
It is also full of careless mistakes e.g. on page 8 we are taught that 'a sinistra' means 'on the right.'
Pulp it!

I'm studying Italian at undergraduate level from scratch. I was struggling to keep up with what I was being taught and so I bought this book. It's really useful. Everything is clearly explained, there's lots of exercises to help you to practice what you have just learned and the answers to the exercises are in the back of the book. I'd recommend this book to anyone studying Italian academically or even if you just want to learn the language for fun.

I am enjoying this book and finding it very helpful, but think it would be pretty scary for a complete beginner to start with. Often the reader is required to give opposites of words which are not in the text being studied, and often there are words which need to be understood in order to answer the questions, but there is no translation given. I think this is frustrating for the reader. Surely the point of a graded reader is that the student doesn't have to keep reaching for a dictionary, thus breaking the flow of the reading and learning? I am managing by ignoring the words I don't know in order to keep the flow going, as I imagine I'll pick them up at some other stage along the way. Good for very confident post-beginners or pre-intermediates onwards.
