I started Teeline last November in an evening class and our teacher uses this book to teach us. It's great to learn and I think I could have nearly managed without the teacher sometimes ... Every now and then a short form which we haven't learnt yet is thrown in a piece, which can be the only confusing bit for someone learning on their own. I've also bought the 'Teeline Word List' and the 'Teeline Word Groupings' which are essential once all the theory is learnt and help build up speed.

Face it - learning Teeline is a complete pig. There is no getting round it. This course is better than most, because it avoids the pompous secretarial tone of the older tomes. However, Dawn's nasal sing-song voice annoyed the hell out of me, and some of the sentences ('who is responsible for filling the bathroom with bubbles?') could only have been generated by a very strange mind. My six month relationship with Teeline for Journalists is over (thank God), but that voice will haunt my dreams forever.

I wouldn't ordinarily review a book on a website but I have had to intervene when I saw that this book has received one star. My Doctoral research is centred on local government and I am a practitioner. From both perspectives (academic and practitioner) I can say that this book is the benchmark text on local government, and I speak as someone who has read widely on the subject for my literature review. It is the core text on many courses for a reason. It is also into it's fourth edition for a reason: it's great. I personally find the writing style very accessible and a change from the dry style adopted by many other texts on local government.

Simply put, if you want to be a Journalist, Editor or Broadcaster then this is a book you simply have to read. What it teaches is that (country to popular belief) great writing doesn't require long words and phrases. Less is more is very much Evans mantra, and through this book he will teach how to write the best headlines and intros to grab your readers and keep them engaged. The back of the book features numerous endorsements which reads like a who's who of the best journalists of the past 30 years. Essential.

I am a layman in politics and am not studying for any examinations but I bought this book as well as the Oxford Dictionary of Politics and the Oxford Companion to Twentieth Century British Politics for reference purposes. I read several chapters and found the style so good that I ended up reading it from cover to cover. Huge chunks of it didn't teach me much more than I already learned either from reading quality weekly magazines and daily newspapers or from overlaps with other subjects that I had previously read quite a lot of e.g.economics, history, philosophy and sociology. Nevertheless, I found it an enjoyable and worthwhile overview of the landscape.

I thought it was good, the pages are laid out well and the course progresses logically at a good speed. Each lesson builds on the previous one and doesn't introduce too much too quickly. However, it does seem to be aimed at secretaries more than journalists.

It is great to have an up-to-date, extensive but easy to use law book that can sit beside my desk. There are increasing instances when I need to check the legal position of a story or clarify which facts I can publish. The use of the Law in Practice examples helps bring those laws to life and will hopefully help me avoid any slip-ups. I reckon this book would be a sound investment for any editor or journalist.
