Firstly a confession, despite or perhaps because of my occupation as a teacher of History, I read very few History texts. However a favourable review by a colleague led me to Tinniswood's excellent book.

Tinniswood has clearly researched this volume meticulously, drawing on previous histories of the Great Fire and a wealth of primary material. The events of 1666 are carefully placed within the political and social context of the period, in particular the Restoration and reign of Charles II and the wars against the Dutch. The unfolding of the Fire itself is recounted with an eye for fascinating details, such as Samuel Pepys burying his Parmesan cheese as the fire drew near to his home. Again Tinniswood draws expertly upon the contemporary ... Read More:

Having admired for a long time some of the theorems of Robert Hooke, and also being amazed of his diversity, I looked forward to reading this book. But I was astonished how an exciting thinker could actually be put back in the cupboard he should have leaft a long time ago! The sometimes tedious descriptions of all correspondences and repetitions of some facts, and the lack of synthetizing the ideas and discoveries of this man, that maybe stand as the sole witnesses of his accomplishments, is somewhat strange. Also, the negligence of defining the time and the environment he lived in, and foremost the probably disadvantage of not being born noble, has not been elucidated far enough. Was he the sole man in the scientific life of the 17th century England not to ... Read More:

Campbell's book on St Pauls is well worth the read, a thoroughly researched acoount of the cathedral from before the fire of London up until the completion of the dome. The pictures throughout the book really help to document St Pauls and the book is just the right length, neither too short or too long.
For those people interested in Wren, I can recommend this book over John Summersons book on the architect, which is more complete in terms of all of his work. However, I found it to be covering more of Wrens life then I felt like i'd ever need to know.

I was a little disappointed with this book. I bought it thinking it would be as good a read as 'Armageddon' by the same author. But here I was wrong. It seems that the author has tried to fill up a long book rather quickly without paying too much attention to the overall readability. He does cover the Japanese point of view too, which is interesting but I think he has included too many personal interviews with survivors. It must be fascinating for someone who lived through it all, who can piece it all together today - but I was left a little confused and just about managed to finish reading the book. Not easy reading.

"The District (Line) ... attracted considerable negative (press) coverage with various mechanical failures and, in particular, its primitive air-operated doors which apparently had a tendency to tear off ladies' skirts, something particularly shocking to the Edwardian psyche." - from THE SUBTERRANEAN RAILWAY

Disclaimer: If you've never visited London and/or fallen in love with the Underground, or at least have no interest in how such mass transportation evolves, then you're likely to find THE SUBTERRANEAN RAILWAY excruciatingly boring. So, as is advised at the stations, just "pass along the platform", so to speak.

Having had the good fortune to enjoy Britain's capital many times, I've found the Tube to be both indispensable and an inseparable ... Read More:

Found it is great introduction to what life was like for a great scientist at a most interesting time in the history of England, London and science. Covers Hooke's role in the rebuilding of London after the great fire, his work for the Royal (and not so Royal during the republican period) Society.

Relatively easy reading, and I keep find I'm referring back to things I read in this book. A book I wouldn't have bought for myself, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

I can't comment on the book since I returned it immediately. Amazon must have had this lying around in a filthy warehouse: it arrived filthy with top and bottom spine well bashed and the wrap-around (with the boat drawing) well worn. All credit to Amazon though that their returns process is excellent. I notice that in the 10 days since I bought it, Amazon have increased the price by 10p! Unusual for old stock (the hardback is obviously out of print)! Anyway, if you think you've sourced the hardback version at a good price, maybe think again. I'm off to pay more at Borders, but at least I know I'm getting a pristine copy.

Over the years, I've bought several copies of this book to give to my friends. Jenny Uglow, puts real flesh on what could be a very stale book. The group of intellectual and business giants who made up this group of friends were incredibly influencial at the start of the Industrial revolution. It would have been easy to fill the book with just the inventions and breakthroughs that this group made.

But what captures you is the shear warmt and respect these men had for each other. The shear curiosity and cross interests they shared is in stark contrast to many of the business and political leaders we see today who are so goal focused they are incapable of any lateral thinking. They solved a great many problems, even if the valiant efforts of at least one member to find ... Read More:

This is of corse the basis for modern evolutionary works ,that being so it's not quite acurate to todays knowlege so this book is more of a historical book. This particular book is of good quality and structure with detailed image of the different species used as examples.
