I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

A superb investigation into the mysteries within the family that lived at Wentworth Woodhouse but so much more than that too.
Catherine Bailey tells the story of a once mighty British industry from all sides, the rich and powerful, the Government, the military and of course the workers and their families. All of this against the secrets and sadness behind a once great estate. The research is incredible and the author constantly leads you down little side tracks from the main tale and they are truly fascinating.
I have visited the grounds of Wentworth since childhood and often stared at the enormous frontage and wondered what stories that house could tell. Catherine will let you in on just some of them and if you have any interest in ... Read More:

What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

Katherine Swynford is a bit of enigma. She's arguably one of the most important figures in British history; she's the ancestress of every monarch since Edward IV, no less than five US presidents and Winston Churchill, among others; and yet most people, if they know of her at all, have only heard of her because of an historical romance, Anya Seton's Katherine. That's largely because so little is known of her, and Alison Weir does a good job piecing together what few fragments of information can be found about her. It's clear she has an affection for her subject, which I always like to see in biography. It may not be entirely unbiased, but I hate reading biographies written by people who clearly have an axe to grind or preconceived conceptions. This is a very good ... Read More:

I am really interested in the Mitford Sisters so I have been really looking forward to getting this book. It was much bigger than I expected but was very enjoyable. I admit that I got a bit bored with all the footnotes and about half-way through just started to ignore them unless I was really confused. Through the letters you get to see life from their many different perspectives, it really made me think of the relationship that I have with my own sister and the many times that we have seen the same situation in very different ways. I would recommend this book to people even if they are not a fan of the Mitfords- it gives a really good insight into that period of history.

Even if you're not a historian you'll enjoy this book. And if you are a historian, you'll appreciate the detailed research that underpins it. The story, the lively writing style and the crazy cast of real characters just won't let you go. Bolsover Castle is certainly the place to visit after reading the book - think of it as the original party palace! I've just bought the paperback after reading the hardback in the library. More please Lucy Worsley!

Charles Nicholl's books about Marlowe and da Vinci have previously graced my reading list: the first is a meticulous reconstruction of Marlowe's final meal in an attempt to explain the playwright's death, which is sometimes a little repetitive; the second a more conventional biography of the renaissance polymath.

The Lodger is closer to the first, in being a depiction of how Shakespeare possibly lived whilst in London, centring on a single event, the signing of a legal deposition by the playwright which concerned his landlord, but fortunately without the repetitiousness.

So little is actually known about the bard that to say it is amazing nobody did this before is an understatement, but it is a tribute to Nicholl that he has picked up the baton and run ... Read More:

This book sparked my interest in London's history generally because you can clearly relate the happenings and statistics in this book to our present times and recent past. A thoroughly enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to reading his 20th century history of London.

I finished reading this excellent book yesterday. I was slightly dubious about it at first, with the subject matter being what it was, but far from it being an out and out grime-fest it proved to be an insightful and well written social history of the very late Tudor and Stuart periods.
The text gives you a really good impression of wha life must have been like for 'ordinary' folks in these times and all the grisly, dirty and unhygienic things they were exposed to.
There is reliance on the work of Diarists and Social Commentators of the time and they prove to be helpful and amusing.
Thomas Tyron in particular stood out to me as a particular joy - with his neurotic and obsessive ideas (but in actual fact they turn out to be rather forward thinking with hindsight).
I can't ... Read More:
