There are two things you need to know about this book. Firstly, it is a (literally) shocking expose about the power, reach, spread and influence of the Comorra, the Naples mafia. It names names, it gives details. It's staggering. It's also laughable in places - when he recounts how a lot of the younger mafiosi can no longer shoot straight, because they'er copying how they hold guns in the movies and rap videos, and the capo who builds himself an copy of Tony Montana's villa.

But the second thing you need to know is that it's really badly written. I don't know if it's the original or the translation - maybe both - but the prose is breathless and florid. Passages need to be read and reread to understand what he's going on ... Read More:

A copy of this book should be put in the hands of every man, woman, child, cat and dog on the planet. We are being drowned in a sea of rolling news, breaking news, 'keeping you updated', etc etc - and it's all crap. Many of us knew the news has been distorted for years, but as Nick Davies proves the modern media can now only produce hogwash (actually, that's an insult to hogwash). At a time when we need a proper Fourth Estate we get junk. There are faults with the book: it's probably overlong and the author mentions only in passing that PR is full of journalists, most of whom would work for whoever pays them and say what they're paid to. But enough of that. That modern news is hype, hysteria and hopeless is proved beyond doubt in page after page ... Read More:

I don't normally write reviews but after such a brilliant book, I think it would be rude not to.
The author's style of writing matches the subject perfectly, and the black humour appealed to me throughout the whole book.
David Simons knowledge is undeniable and you can tell that he has researched this thoroughly.
Because of this book I have started watching 'the wire'(how did I miss that series when it came out?), and they have complimented each other perfectly.
Thanks for a cracking read.

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

Readable, passionate, but... if true, the latest financial crash would have seen another swift extension of market power. But does govt control or ownership of the banks, talk of aggressive new regulation or the 'end of capitalism' sound like capitalism making hay? Are we really seeing a retreat from govt or state activity in the face of recession?

On the contrary, this latest shock is widely described as a disaster for capitalism. The doctrine fails its first test. The former chairman of the Federal reserve - Alan Greenspan - talks about this shock as though it has fundamentally undermined the theoretical constructs of capitalism by showing the weakness of self interest. When the priests are becoming apostates, how can the shock be said to further their former creed? ... Read More:

A good effort - from my limited experience of Bond books, I can't really tell this apart from one. The plot is interesting and perilous and goes places bond never went before (e.g. the Soviet Union and Persia). It also has all most of the ingredients in the right proportions (girls, guns & glamour), which make for a good action adventure, without lapsing into cliche.

A word on the narrator. Jeremy Northam isn't as good as Rufus Sewell is on the other Bond audio books, but is clear and slightly edgy which make for a well spoken and not dull voice, even if it is not overly brimming with character at times...

My one criticism is that the text is a little crude at various points, which I know the Bond books can be, but this one seemed unnecessarily lecherous in its attempt ... Read More:

Tig Hague's account of his arrest at Sheremetyevo, remand in Moscow, trial and time spent in a Mordovian prison camp is a vivid description of two shockingly different worlds clashing - that of a naive Western European on a business trip and the harshness and brutality of life on the wrong side of the Russian justice system.

Hague was desperately unlucky to be there - he had overlooked the fact that there was a small amount of hashish in his jeans. Then he failed to understand that the corrupt official at the airport wanted a bribe, leading to a search of his clothes, leading to a conviction for drug smuggling and two years of misery and terror.

Zone 22 makes for very compelling reading. The stories are so horrifying that it is impossible to put the book down. He also finishes ... Read More:

Quite simply the best TV series ever made. Blows every other American and British TV dramas out of the water. Watch from season 1 through to 5 and be astounded and amazed at what heights TV drama can reach. From street corners to the corridors of power in Baltimore, stories are told in staggering detail. Excellent cast, fantastic characters. The Wire season 5 is just as good as seasons 1 - 4. The story ends, good guys don't always win, bad guys get away, so authentic in it's depiction is what makes it so good. No more seasons of the wire? In the words of Clay Davis "Shiiiiiiiiiit"

When Markets Collide: Investment Strategies for the Age of Global Economic Change
Mohamed El Erian has spent many years involved in the emerging markets and this book gives a very valuable insight into the impact that these markets are having on the financial landscape and how to capitalize on it.

In future the emerging markets will be much more important drivers of the world economy than the US, UK, Europe or Japan.

The book talks about the crisis caused by the undervaluation of risk combined with the under-assessment of the quantity of risk outstanding and the consequential fundamental changes taking place. The sheer complexity of the structure of financial products and the inability of the regulatory system to keep on top of these developments has been a catalyst in the resulting ... Read More:

The only problem I have with The Wire is having to get to the end. This, the penultimate series, is by far the greatest drama to have EVER been televised and having just watched the final episode I feel almost empty knowing I have only one more series left to enjoy.
However, I am also looking forward to watching the entire box set all over again. There's always so much happening in The Wire I'm sure there'll be plenty I've missed!
This series concentrated mostly on Baltimore's educational system and provided a platform for some of the finest young actors I've ever seen.
As always, the writing is outstanding and you're left with a feeling that nothing else on television even comes close to the high standards set by David Simon, but despite having the Presidential Seal of Approval (it's Barack's fave ... Read More:
