I don't normally write reviews but after such a brilliant book, I think it would be rude not to. The author's style of writing matches the subject perfectly, and the black humour appealed to me throughout the whole book. David Simons knowledge is undeniable and you can tell that he has researched this thoroughly. Because of this book I have started watching 'the wire'(how did I miss that series when it came out?), and they have complimented each other perfectly. Thanks for a cracking read.

Quite simply the best TV series ever made. Blows every other American and British TV dramas out of the water. Watch from season 1 through to 5 and be astounded and amazed at what heights TV drama can reach. From street corners to the corridors of power in Baltimore, stories are told in staggering detail. Excellent cast, fantastic characters. The Wire season 5 is just as good as seasons 1 - 4. The story ends, good guys don't always win, bad guys get away, so authentic in it's depiction is what makes it so good. No more seasons of the wire? In the words of Clay Davis "Shiiiiiiiiiit"

To me, this book is the most unexpected page-turning thriller I've read in some time. I couldn't wait for the next surprise. I was reminded of first reading the early Ian Fleming books about James Bond, feeling like I'd entered a fascinating new world that I never had never dreamed of. But Stieg Larsson's writing is much better than Fleming's and these characters are more nuanced in their unusual characteristics. The book defies normal novel categories. There are such a major story lines about both the hero and heroine that the novel would be more than adequate just developing those ideas. The mystery of a young woman's disappearance is more than adequate to sustain the interest of anyone who likes books about amateur detectives. ... Read More:

I am always interested in people's life story, especially that of famous people. He is the proud of black people. I am still reading this book, haven't finished it yet, but really enjoying it. I can learn a lot from it.

The only problem I have with The Wire is having to get to the end. This, the penultimate series, is by far the greatest drama to have EVER been televised and having just watched the final episode I feel almost empty knowing I have only one more series left to enjoy. However, I am also looking forward to watching the entire box set all over again. There's always so much happening in The Wire I'm sure there'll be plenty I've missed! This series concentrated mostly on Baltimore's educational system and provided a platform for some of the finest young actors I've ever seen. I like reading about dedicated experts in a particular field. In this case, Judges Falcone and Borsellino, and others, taking on the mafia. It really is an interesting, shocking and moving story.

I recently re-read Roger Lowenstein's biography, Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist (first published in 1995 and now re-issued with a new Afterword), and then read this more recent one by Alice Schroeder. Both are first-rate. Which to select if reading only one? That depends on how much you wish to know about Buffett's personal life, including his relations with various family members, and how curious you are about his personal hang-ups, peculiarities, eccentricities, fetishes, etc. If you can do without any of that, Roger Lowenstein's biography is the one to read. I also highly recommend the recently published Second Edition of The Essays of Warren Buffet: Lessons for Corporate America, with content selected, arranged, and introduced by Lawrence Cunningham. I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it. The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious. I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this. I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!
