: English Society in the Eighteenth Century (Penguin Social History of Britain)
Roy Porter, who died at the early age of 55, wrote this wonderful history and in many ways it is his memorial. It is comprehensive in its range, provides minute and often colourful details by way of illustration and examples of matters raised, and above all demonstrates an intimate and loving knowledge of the period. Moreover the book is both stylish and witty. A pleasure to read.

One of the pleasures of reading Jane Austen is trying to figure out what is left unsaid and unexplained. Also Tempora and Mores have changed, and the reactions and behaviour of the heroines can be rather odd at times, seen at a distance of 200 years and from across the North Sea.
Ever read Icelandic sagas? The sort in which Egil Egilsson's wife has left him - telling everyone in detail as to why - and throughout the next winter "people often talked about the matter" . I bet they did!
And Egil "thought about it, and he was not pleased". I bet he wasn't. Considering the mayhem that followed.
The joy is in imagining what is being said and thought, and why.
This pretty, well-illustrated book is a fine companion for imagining. ... Read More:

3.High Society in the Regency Period: 1788-1830 by: Venetia Murray

This book is a re-issue under a differnet name of Ms Murray's An Elegant Madness. I was disappointed to find that it was the exact copy of her other noval Elegant Madness but enjoyed it just as much. Ms Murray as a very funny way of explaining things and had me laughing all the way through this book. It is a wonderful insight into the workings of the Regency Society. I loved the pictures that are shown in this book as well. I was surprised to find that a Mistress had a better time than a wife and was cared for more.

Although 'Georgiana' is competently written and well-researched, I am frankly amazed that it has achieved such massive success and popularity since its first publication ten years ago. As other reviewers have pointed out, it perhaps fulfills a useful purpose in putting women back in the 'front-line' of the eighteenth-century political scene but, speaking for myself, I found the exhaustive discussion of the ups-and-downs of the Whigs and Tories tedious in the extreme and an almost total turn-off. This was doubly disappointing, since the rave reviews had led me to expect so much more.

Strangely enough, the most engaging part of the book was the introduction, in which the author writes with real verve and enthusiasm of how she was first 'introduced' to the ... Read More:

This is a great book giving you an insight into the darker side of Georgian life. A captivating read and a most enlightening book. A must for anyone trying to understand England in the 1800's.

This book will open your eyes to what lay behind the pomp and splendor of the times.

Joanna Martin is already author of two books, Fox Talbot and Glamorgan and A Governess in the Age of Jane Austen. She is also an extremely talented professional genealogist. In her latest book she applies the scrutinising eye of a true professional to an interrelated group of families, focussing on the lives and loves of their female members.

Women have been neglected by history for centuries. The last decades have seen a massive refocusing of interest, thanks not least to the rise of women in the previously male-dominated world of publishing. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, published in 2004, made headlines, correctly, for including many biographies of women in its previously very masculine halls of fame. Throughout history, it was women who looked after households, ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite books, because its about human behavior and habits that for me are totally fascinating. When we study history at school we in the main learn political history, kings and queens, battles and generals, so during the period in question I suspect everyone could name one of the Tudors, but, would any of us really have an understanding of how those people lived on a daily basis. Enter this book, it covers the main aspects of Love, Sex and Marriage during this period, including details such as confinement, dowries, parent child relationships, sexual habits, contraception, child-birth, and, even includes an analysis of the sexual behaviors of Samuel Pepys and James Boswell.

I found it extremely readable and full of fascinating facts, for instance, it describes ... Read More:

This DVD version is absolutely fantastic. I watch it all the time. Both Sally Hawkins and especially Rupert Percy Jones are wonderful in this production. I was caught up with Cpt. Wentworth's cold icy look which gradually turned softer as he realised his feelings for Anne were being revived. I especially loved when they meet in the shop during the rain, when he speaks of how a man cannot overcome such a passion to such a woman, he can barely look at her! The parts were played perfectly and although it differentiates from the book on many levels I adored every second of it. I loved the 1995 version but Cpt. Wentworth was not how I imagined - I much prefer the RPJ eye candy with his dulcet dones declaring his undying love for Anne Elliot.

5 Stars. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys ... Read More:
