This is an excellent little reference book on the Popes, benefiting greatly by being updated to include Benedict XVI.

This work presents each pope, and anti-pope, in chronological order, which enables the reader to have a continuous history of the papacy. Each pope or anti-pope is provided with a brief biography including birth and death dates, parentage, relationships to other popes or church luminaries, and their careers before and during (and sometimes after) their papacy. In some cases these biographies are surprisingly in-depth for such a work. At the end of each biography is a list of references which can be used to guide the interested reader to further reading on a particular pope or anti-pope.

This work is, without a doubt, the absolute benchmark when it comes to the study of English popular religion on the eve of the Reformation. Duffy brings the lost world of late medieval / early modern English Catholicism to life in such an enthralling fashion that you're almost as sorry about the Reformation even happening as Duffy is himself.

This is an illuminating and endearingly personal account of the nature of Catholicism today, and how, post-Vatican II, it keeps in touch with its past. Eamon Duffy ranges widely across subjects as diverse as the role of the saints, Catholic dying, and the nature of the Eucharist. Despite an obvious liturgical conservatism, the author is clearly something of an enthusiast for the postmodern melting-pot that is Roman Catholicism after Vatican II. On issues like papal authority and the role of the priesthood, he argues that the 'Tridentine moment' of high-Renaissance authoritarian Catholicism is finaly passing - and revealing, as it goes, some surprising links with an earlier, more human-scale Catholicism. One might perhaps expect a Professor of Church History ... Read More:

This is without doubt a must have book. The photographs are breathtaking and the narrative supports them well. This is a unique insight into some of the more private areas of the Vatican as well as some of the more well known. It is now a few years since its publication, but that doesnt detract from its impact. Go, read and be inspired!

Thus ended the career of the parish priest of Morebath, there was he buried, between two religions, two social worlds, two distinct weltanschuung. Taken from his parish register, which gives full details of accounts with a full and interesting commentary by him ,Christopher Trychay, who served the parish from 1520 - 1574, this book gives an interesting account of the minutiae of parish life throughout the events of the 16th century.
I wonder whether it is possible to write of the Reformation without one's own loyalties being obvious, indeed other reviewers have clearly revealed their own, but Professor Duffy , himself a Catholic, certainly writes not only with considerable affection for the pre-Reformation world but also with some appreciation for the ... This book is meticulously researched and presented with beautiful colour plates on almost every page. Duffy's devotion to his subject is infectious. Here he writes with a simple lightness of touch which makes for easy reading that remains yet scholarly and accessible. This is a beautiful book to own and keep or to give as a gift. Many finely reproduced images are here available and now lend themselves for all time to thoughtful reflection anywhere. This is a quality product and a worthy tribute to the material which was so cherished and lovingly preserved through the ages by so many classes of people even after the reformation.

: Vicars of Christ: The Dark Side of the Papacy
The facts are well known but rarely presented in such a readable form. It is an extraodinary tale of mischief and mayhem supposedly in the name of God. It devastates some unusual claims of the church but does it without getting out the hammer.
What gives the book its edge is that Peter de Rosa was once in the church and writes with considerable sympathy. It would be easy to write a book of mockery but he doesn't. His point about the development of the hatred of Jews has remained with me since I first read the book many years ago. His predictions/hopes for the incumbent pope at the time of writing are since proven wrong - but that is the benefit of time.
It is fascinating but not a threat for anyone who has a Christian faith and probably uncomfortable for ... Read More:

There are many books written on religion at the moment. What struck me about this book in contrast to 'God supplanting' books is that it is very gently and reasonably written. It is free from polemic and vitriol. Although I do not necessarily agree with everything this Pope says he is certainly a great rational man and a good man.It is not always easy to write an interesting book about Jesus - there must be more books written on him than anyone else for a start. However, I found that this book was always interesting and frequenly insightful. Benedict is clearly an outstanding scholar. What was also remarkable is that he can give an account of perspectives that he doesn't necessarily agree with but he can do this in a calm and inoffensive manner.

This edition is a mixed bag of Ignatius' writings (1491-1556), including the Reminiscences, Spiritual Diary, forty of his letters, and the famous Exercises themselves. It comes with a helpful introduction, and extensive, often fascinating, endnotes.

The Reminiscences were dictated towards the end of his life to a friend who write them down. Although they miss out much important material regarding the growth of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), they provide a fascinating first-hand account of Ignatius' early life and the key moments in his journey. It is astonishing to discover that he didn't make it to university in Paris until he was 36 years old, that he paid his way over six years there by begging, and that among his friends and founding members of the Jesuits was ...
