I have had some lengthy discussions with a Christian friend of mine about religions in general and, in particular, Christianity. A lot of our discussion was about Richard Dawkins' recent book, The God Delusion, which I had recently finished. I thought that he should read it and he agreed that he would on the condition that I read Velvet Elvis. So he lent me the book and I have now read it.

I was born to parents who didn't believe in any of the gods on offer in today's world. I went to a Church of England primary school and a Catholic secondary school and was allowed to come to my own conclusions about whether or not any gods exist. I found the evidence lacking and so without the experience of `meeting Jesus' which compels some ... Read More:

Bought in an US airport lounge as the speel in the Author's Note at the front caught my attention.

'I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn't resolve. But I was outside Bagdad Theatre in Portland one night when I saw a man playing the saxophone. I stood there for 15 minutes, and he never opened his eyes.
After that I liked jazz music.
Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if they are showing you the way.
I used to not like God because God didn't resolve. But that was before any of this happened.'

Pretty American but not anything like stereotypical American Christianity. Seems like Generation X with faith. Probably most attractive to the 20's and ... Read More:

This is one of the best, most challenging and thought provoking books around at the moment. Despite it's American target audience (we don't have a president here - yet) it makes great reading for any reader, as its themes are universal.

This is unlikely to look like any book you have ever read before, it's got nearly as much in common with a graphic novel as it has with a standard text book. The best comparison I can give, and it is quite inappropriate really given the anti consumerist approach of the authors, is with a Howies clothing catalogue. It has that same earthy, lived in, thoughtful, artistic and engaging feel, but thankfully without the pictures of models wearing expensive clothes.

Put simply, this has got to be one of the ... Read More:

McLaren has moved somewhat from earlier work which is invitational in approach, to this much more challenging review of the state of the world which draw one into a deeper interpretation of the message of Jesus.

I was frustratedly asking 'Yes, but how?' though most of the book, and somewhat like Jesus, Brian leaves us not with an answer, but rather with a whole host of questions to consider.

I think his approach to describing the context of Jesus' world very helpful, and his relating that ancient world to our contemporary situation is insightful and seems well researched.

What we are left with is the possibility of collectively living life in a way which at first seems impossible. He isn't rewriting Christian Doctrine, in my ... Read More:

In many ways this book acts as a popular level summary of Wright's recent thinking, and that is both its strength and ultimately also its weakness. The book's big idea is that Jesus' bodily resurrection is not a one off event but rather the forerunner of the general resurrection, and that this is the key which makes sense of a great deal of new testament thinking, in the gospels and the letters and in Revelation. He contends that the loss of belief in the bodily resurrection being replaced by an idea of a non-corporeal heaven has resulted not only in a loss of appropriate hope for christians but also has wider consequences for theology and for how christians live their lives. These are important ideas, clearly expressed and forcefully argued. The book's weaknesses stem from ... Read More:

I do find a lot of Christian books very hard to get into and a lot seem very dry and irrelevant. I actually picked up this book when I was in the States and found it extremely readable and interesting. He is basically trying to get back to the idea of Christianity as a relationship, rather than a rule book. His ideas that morality is the consequence of a relationship with God - and therefore is more of a betrayal in that relationship than the contravening of some rule book, was particularly key to the whole book. It was a good introduction too for those who may be attracted to Christ, but repelled by a lot of what they see in religion. There were flaws in it - there was a bit where his history wasn't quite right and there were a few things about his interpretation of the Bible ... Read More:

he does talk some awful rubbish...

I got to the end of this book and all I could think was "what did all that mean?" What does this emerging movement actually believe?

That said, if I'd not read it I'd probably not have thought about it enough to decide what I really think about some of this stuff.

To be taken with a large-ish pinch of salt...

I really enjoyed Frost's earlier book, The Shaping of Things to Come, so I picked this one up without hesitation. It's a book written for those who find themselves on the outside of church, or somewhere between the church and culture, and it seeks to explore a vision for Christian living in this 'wilderness'.

In the first part of the book Frost explores the idea of the exile through God's people, and through Jesus himself as an exile. He then delivers something of a manifesto for non-institutional christian living, based around community, generosity, authenticity, service, and whole-life discipleship. Finally, he shows how Christians outside the mainstream church have the opportunity to model good attitudes back to society and the church, particularly where we have failed in the ...
