I had read this fantasic novel some years ago and recently I read it again. I am actually not very often inclinded to re-read books but here I was - like some years ago - absolutely hooked and could not put it down. This is historcial novel writing as it should be. "The Reckoning folows Penman's inititial success "The Sunne in Splendour" and is writing with the same knowledge, passion and superb style of writing. Since her first novel she has never disappointed her readers.. The novel re-awakens medieval Wales and England and a long lost time for today's reader. Simply superb!!!

This, the second part of Sharon Penman's Welsh/Norman trilogy, focuses mainly on the career of the "greatest soldier in Christendom" and the oft-called father of representative government, Simon de Montfort. The book's other focus is on Wales, particularly the northern principality of Gwynedd, divided and beset by enemies after the death of Llewelyn Fawr. The story of Simon de Montfort is a thrilling one, and Penman brings him to life in these pages with her usual skill. The English monarchy is shown in a far less sympathetic light, and no wonder, since Henry III was one of England's weakest kings, petty, vindictive and vacillating. This is the first book I have read by Ms Penman and I have to say- I am sold! Much better than Ms Gregory as Ms Penman knows her history, and clearly Sandra Worth enjoyed this novel so much that she felt she just had to copy it but in a watered down version! The only problem I have with this book, is why, the Duke of York does not come into it. That makes no sense to me. Overall, a fantastic read.

Sharon Penman is one of the best writers of historical fiction living today. This book is the first in a trilogy about Henry II of England and his tumultuous marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. The book opens some years before Henry's birth and deals with the civil war that ravaged England between 1135 and 1154. The death of Henry I, second son of William the Conqueror, leaves his barons with a dilemma. His only legitimate son has drowned, and he names as his heir his daughter Maude, widow of the Holy Roman Emperor and now married to Count Geoffrey of Anjou. The barons have no desire to be ruled by a woman, and so her cousin Stephen takes the throne. I always look forward to a Sharon Penman novel that I have not read before. This one kept me interested throughout the book. She has the ability to make the reader feel they are there with the characters, no mean feat. The story is about the turbulent relationship between Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Starting in 1156 the couple have been married for four years. The birth of their sons has ensured the succession to the throne, but civil war has seen the country torn apart. Henry needs to defend the borders of England against France and Wales, but his most daunting task is his fight with the church to stop them from infringing on his power. Not surprisingly for Sharon Penman, this book lives up to her standards of background research. It is better paced than the previous Queen's Man, and shorter and easier to read than some of her more epic works. It tells of the young Justin de Quincey and his dealings with Eleanor of Aquitaine as her spy come confidante. Penman introduces some beautifully drawn characters and evokes the true ethos of medieval life (with a little extra hint of joi de vivre!).

Having read my copy of "Pillars of The Earth" at least 4 times, I just had to get the follow-up. Stainding over 1000 pages, its not a tome to pick on a whim, but its another superb travel through historical England. (Don't panick if you still haven't experienced the magnificent "Pillars", as the characters are a few generations on). Any fans of historical fiction will love this tale of love, deceit and heart-ache. Throw in some meaty action, add some pestilence and suffering, and you're left with a book that will keep you enthralled and captivated. I loved it. 5 stars once again for Follett!!

I personally loved this book. It is not a particularly (if at all) 'intellectual' book - it is a romance and thriller novel that spans so many pages it manages to find itself wound up as a tome of a book. Nevertheless, if you are going on a trip or find yourself needing something to read, give this a try. It is not as difficult as it may appear, and, quite fun!
