The purpose of this book is to increase your conversion rate, in other words sales on your site using a multitude of different methods. It tries to cover all bases everything from usability issues, writing effective persuasive copy, web analytics, understanding your customers etc. It bashes on about the what's and the why's but often avoids the how's (especially on web analytics) which lets the book down.

If you're new to all this and want an overview then this might be the book you're looking for, the reason I say might is that the book is so repetitive that it could easily have been a third of the size and would still have covered everything it did, this is rather annoying as they could have spent more time digging deeper into ... I think this is an OK but there are to many abbreviations of words and after reading half the book it becomes very dry and uninteresting.(paint drying moments)

I am sure this book would help you move up the google rankings, but from a programmers perspective I believe you can find all you want on googles website and related forums. Think I wasted my money here.

I run a small website and SEO has always been on my list of things to do yet I could never find enough motivation to sit down and actually find out what the whole fuss is about and how to go about being a part of it. This book certainly sorted this out for me once and for all. It's very much like a user-friendly textbook (and one does not come across these very often) which takes you step by step through all the stages of implementing a successful SEO. As a, self-taught, one-man-band website owner/designer/coder/developer I was surprised to realise, upon reading the book, that I was not the 'target audience' for it. I think its more for the middle-men and consultants of big organisations who want to plan a project to the nth degree before a big budget is blown on it.

Because of my hands-on experience, I found that this book merely gave me formal names for many of the processes and aspects of Information Architecture (IA) that I had been implementing already. Despite this, however, I learned a lot from this book. It rounded-off aspects of the topic that I had previously overlooked. It filled some holes and inspired me to make many changes to the information structure of my website.

It's about discovering what your users want, what they're doing on your website, and how you can help them get to where they want to be. Avinash does a superb job of explaining this in his book, and if you're in any way serious about doing web analytics the right way, you need to get this book.

This is a very lightweight book on designing for the web. It is easy to be bamboozled by the pretty pictures and great looking websites that are featured in the book, but the material is not very authorative and gives the impression that the author hasn't been long out of college: and the lack of experience really shows.

You will eventually realise that the reason all the example sites look good is because they are simple sites packed with graphic design (legitimate sites, but hardly typical). The book lacks examples of corporate brochure sites, online shops etc. the kind of practical sites that web designers need to build on an everyday basis. They do work up an example of a tile seller brochure site, but it it a very weak example.

Get into bed with google is a really simple to read book that has really short chapters to digest the all important information and task of getting friendly with google, I highly recommend it from the author Jon Smith who displays a no nonsense approach to the aspects of search engine optimization and the rights and wrongs of how to get better results with Google and actually have them index your website.

If you follow the simple strategies and techniques offered in this handy pocket sized book, your website will be better equipped than most other websites and give you some definitive pointers to build and improve any website you create.

Great read and useful too.

I find this is an invaluable book and will often return to it when starting a new project - whether that's a new website or redesigning an old one. It takes you through all the necessary stages in running a web project, without overloading you with information. You won't overlook any detail if you follow through the book. The author's website is worth a visit and you can download template documents for carrying out client surveys, setting a budget etc. I always use these now.
