....it'd be Naples '44. Never has Lewis's voice been truer than this account of his time in Southern Italy during the closing stages of the WWII. Posted there as an Intelligence Officer, who, by his own admission, has no clue why he's there or what he's supposed to be doing. But, anyone familiar with Lewis will know that he's an industrious type chap who manages to keep himself busy, and it's in these vignettes of Neapolitan life that decrys the hilarity, the savageness and the sheer lunacy of wartime life. If Heller's Catch-22 was savage in its denouncement of war, Naples '44 is perhaps more so as most of it is true.

Lewis is a wonderful stylist, with at times a highly sardonic viewpoint that made me laugh out loud one minute only ... Read More:

Lewis begins this volume with a description of a chance encounter in the elegant dining car of a train in pre-war Italy, which would lead to a friendship spanning decades.

This familiar Lewis combination of a world now disappeared and the importance of genuine friendships, all described in his economic but intensly lyrical style make for a book that is truly engrossing.

Despite a lifetime of describing events and people from across the world, Lewis avoids both cynicism (except when dealing with authoritarians) or wide eyed wonder. His encounters with profound brutalities in Guatemala or Indo China are described with as much care for the details as are the idiosyncracies of his housekeeper or for that matter those of Jonathon Cape ... The UK edition is a miserable production. For much the same price get the US edition published by Carroll & Graf through Amazon 'used and new' list, or Abebooks. It has a larger format with proper margins on nice paper and opens properly, but type only slightly bigger and still rather squidgy.
How fictional is the book? Reviews talk about Farol and Sort as if they're real places, but I can't find them. Does anybody know?

This is actually one of the books on the Mafia you SHOULD get. The main strong point being it's ability to explain the background of the mafia. It's also well written, this is good "story telling".

If you get this you should complement it with "Excellent Cadavers" by Alexander Stille. Together they give you enough information to navigate further. Both of them deal with the Sicilian mafia, but concentrate on different periods.

Here, Lewis visits Burma soon after the end of WWII, spurred on by the knowledge that the complex political climate will soon make it impossible to visit the country. Even so, he has difficulties navigating his way round the country, dogged by the opposing needs of bureaucracy, the military and the problems of native insurgents of all political creeds. His work is beautiful and poignant. His hope at the end of the book that the Burmese will overcome their differences and take pride in their nationality and what makes them so unique, seems so much more tragic given the contemporary knowledge we have of the harsh and brutal military regime in Burma, their appalling human rights record and the recent purges by the government.
Lewis writes with compassion ... Read More:
