This is a magnificent story of the plight of women in Afghanistan, both before, during and after the Taliban. It traces the story of Mariam and Laila, both from very different background, but both finding themselves living without freedom, with constant violence and with nothing but their love for one another and the dream of a better life to keep them going.

Books such as this are essential reading because so many of us are ignorant to the every day lives of people living in a war torn country such as Afghanistan. We hear about the victims of regimes, but when you look at stories in newsprint, or hear them on TV whilst you are eating a good dinner, or living your comfortable life, they can be distant. This book, despite it being fiction, ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this book, eventhough it took me a while to get into it. I found the middle and latter part of his life much more intesting. It was very intersting to observe the change in his character and in his fortunes from a successful, popular, weathly younger man into an eldery, more humble, caring person who died alone. I didn't particularly like him as a younger/middle aged man, but began to sympathise with him as he faced death. Very easy to read and based on this, I would definitely try another of this author's books.

In `New Grub Street' George Gissing delves into the nature of the literary world of late Nineteenth Century London. His portrayal is stark and certainly in some ways pessimistic. Don't think, though, this subject matter too obscure. If anything, Gissing's observations are even more true today.

Gissing's skill at depicting the subtleties and contradictions of character, both male and female is unmatched, even in the modern age. `New Grub Street' moves you because you believe in the characters that he creates, and what's more, you can't help liking them. Even Jasper Milvain, who seems so hateful in the first chapter becomes rounded, full, even likeable at times.

The imagery that Gissing weaves into his text is gentle and apposite but ... Read More:

This novel charts the progress of Francis Jay, a failing journalist, in his efforts to unveil the history of the elusive Doctor Criminale. Criminale is a highly respected philosopher. He is notable for bridging the academic disciplines, politics and pop culture. Jay initially delves into the philosophy of Crimnale but is persuaded to make a tabloid documentary uncovering the "real" Criminale.

Whilst this works as a novel it is essentially a critique of postmodernism. This philosophy denies the existence of all universals. Its most conspicuous features have been described as "varity, contingency and ambivalence", the "permanent and iredducible pluralism of cultures, communal traditions and ideologies, "forms of life" or "language games" " (Bauman). ... Compared to the mastery of Robert Harris' other work - of which I am a huge fan, this is a dreadful, dull, uninspiring, completely unbelievable read. What a waste of time!

Although this novel ends with a birth and a death, for most of its pages, Deaf Sentence celebrates life, albeit one that is a little disadvantaged. Forced to retire because of his rapidly diminishing hearing, linguistics professor Desmond Bates is not exactly going through a mid-life crisis, but in the preceding months has reached a point in his life where he is subtly questioning everything. Desmond has had a fulfilling career teaching at a local northern University, and he's mostly happily married to his entrepreneurial wife Fred "Winifred" who runs a trendy design store called Décor. But even as Desmond settles into a middle-aged life, he worries about his increasingly spotty sexual performance. While Fred seems to be getting better with age, blooming into the flower ... I have seldom read as unsympathetic, unloving, and unenjoyable novel as Bradbury's 'The History Man'. The author, with his unrelenting pushing of irony and pages-long tracts of dialogue, has created a narrative voice which makes you feel neither empathy nor hatred towards a single character.
As other reviewers have hinted at, but not said explicitly, the book is hideously of its time, and totally irrelevant to the modern reader. All great art speaks towards a timeless quality within ourselves; all 'The History Man' speaks towards is a general dislike for 70's marxists and hippies.

I bought this book after reading a wonderful review in a book shop, but I have to say the cover was a turn off. I bought it anyway and so enjoyed the book that I read it in a matter of days. The writing is wonderful and the characters appear unconnected but slowly draw you in with their stories - so much so, that they become part of your own thoughts when you put the book down.
An absolute gem!

It has been almost a year since I read this biography but I enjoyed it. I am not an expert on Hardy by any means and have not read any other accounts of his life although I have enjoyed reading both his novels and poems.
I appreciated the detailed construction of the society Hardy was born into. From the start we are aware of what type of family he was born into, the struggles he faced and his ambition to learn. The helpful map at the start demonstrates the extent to which Hardy's world was centred around a small patch of England. I also found Tomalin's accounts of Hardy's novels to be thoughtful, incisive and interesting. I have not read Desperate Remedies, but I will. Her analysis of his poetry is equally informative and astute. She is not afraid to criticise her subject, but is always aware of what he ... Read More:
