I came late to the joys of the writing of Andrea Camilleri and his flawed and ageing Inspector Salvo Montalbano. Which is a tragedy for me since I dislike going back to earlier stories when I already know how the characters have evolved.

Fortunately, I came across 'The Scent of the Night' whilst on holiday so ordered this book ready for my return. I'm glad I did. This is the seventh in the series; I've no idea how many more can be created by the author but both books I've read are simply full of warmth in the writing, seriousness in the characterisation and, on top of all that, there is the added bonus of a good few snippets of Sicilian food recipes.

Camilleri, ably aided by his excellent translator, creates a picture ... Read More:

I love these books. Camilleri writes with such a love of his characters and country and it oozes from every page. Montalbano is so real, a rough and ready cop, a fighter for human dignity and the old school way of doing things, butting up against nodern technology and corruption and taking it head on. In this book, an elderly couple go missing after an organized day trip and Montalbano is sent to investigate. Their seemingly ordinary lives start to unravel and Montalbano is there to pick up the pieces and restore order.

I absolutely loved this book. Crime, food, wickedly dry humour and the evocative life of Sicily all wrapped up in one unputdownable novel. I haven't read the series in any sequence, as I didnt realise there was one, but it hasnt distracted me from the delicious narrative. An total joy from start to finish (wherever you start in the series!)

I love the Montalbano series but this is the weakest of the lot. The plot is paper thin and just silly. Livia comes over as a different character altogether, not the charming and feisty lover of previous books, just down right annoying. Overall there is less humour and above all a serious lack of attention to the plot. Not the most enjoyable visit to Vigata but still readable.

Having said this is the best one I've read so far I know I've already said this about another one in the series. The cool thing is that I'm reading them totally out of order, so it's not as if the early works (of which this is one) are weaker than the later works. They are all great, and if you haven't yet read Montalbano you are in for a real treat, but there are some really outstanding moments in this one which for my money set it apart.

Montalbano is a wonderful detective, he's unswervingly uncorruptible in a world where corruption is rife. He is a Sicilian through and through. He is sensitive, loyal and a total swine to the women who love him. He is cultured and yet has the common touch. He is obsessed by his dinner and hates nothing more than ... Read More:

'The alarm rang as it had every morning for the past year, at seven thirty.'

Things have changed for Montalbano and he needs some help - his internal clock has stopped. Are his detecting instincts still ticking? A woman reports her brother's death and Montalbano investigates the murder. There's a mix of mafiosi, fraud and unusual relationships but his sound instincts lead him to the truth.

How sad to think that there will never be another Aurelio Zen novel, following the untimely death of Michael Dibdin. This is a fitting finale to the series, following the darker strain of Dibdin's writing rather than the often misunderstood wry humour. Zen is temporarily posted to Calabria, where even more than usual, he is made to feel an outsider. In a complex plot involving local myth and history, organised crime, rich American film-makers and plenty of brutality, Dibdin is on top form. The characters are typically well crafted, always interesting, rarely likeable or comfortable. Zen is clearly getting older and possibly even less tolerant; his instincts seem secure but as ever, his unorthodox methods cause much controversy.

I like the writing of Donna Lean. It's extremely evocative of Venice, and I feel comfortable in the company of her detective Commissario Brunetti. Her style of writing is fluent and enjoyable, her plots well thought out and intriguing. Normally! Perhaps she was having an "off period" while she was writing "Suffer the little Children", perhaps she was distracted by something, but it is not up to the usual standard. I'd be hard put to, to give a reason, but for me it just didn't seem to work. It somehow felt awkward and ill fitting, if indeed a book can be ill fitting. Read this novel by all means, but don't make it your first excursion into the world of Brunetti.

This wasn't a bad read but it is terribly predictable and very short on atmosphere. I'd have liked to taste and smell a bit of Italy here but the format is very dry and very American.

This is the third book I've read by Carofiglio, and what you need to know is that, although not a lot 'happens' - we are defnitely not in plot-driven thriller territory here - the characters are so convincingly drawn that we get deeply involved, and care about them. For my money, Carofiglio is the outstanding 'crime' writer of today - and astonishingly, his subtleties have survived in the excellent translations.

If you like excellent writing, moral ambiguity and character led stories, go out and buy the whole series!
