Following on from 'Tuesday's War', 'Charlie's War' takes us on the ultimate road trip through a shattered Europe at the fag end of WWII.

Charlie Bassett, sometime pilot officer come padre, finds himself on the road trip to end all road trips, taking him through France, Belgium and eventually Germany, where he ends up in bombed-out Bremem, in search of the ever illusive Grace. He gets double-crossed, kills a couple of bounty-hunters, falls in love, saves some children, survives a snake attack and a plane crash and wins a French medal for gallantry on the way. Of course all these adventures are made even more surreal by the eclectic company he keeps and the strange encounters on the way.

It's that fascinating combination ... Read More:

Living as most of us do now, so remote from the threat of death, how can we truly appreciate the urgency of the moment, the 'live for the now' spirit of wartime Britain?

Tuesday's War brings this home like no other story I have ever read. It captures the intensity, vitality and utter insanity that coursed through the twenty-something generation during the final year of the war. I had never really appreciated how so completely alive these times and its people must have been.

The book moves at breathtaking space. It's a vivid, dramatic, characterful, hilarious, tragic recreation of life on the edge for seven members of a Lancaster bomber crew and one very special girl.

Was there really so much wild sex?! Wow!

I have not yet finished this book, but the plot/style is clear. As stated elsewhere, the author has obviously gone for a WW 2 "Sharpe". The only surprising thing about this is, why didn't someone else do exactly that years ago?
Weird.
This is the first book I have read written by James Holland and I like it. He has done an excellent job in creating Sgt. Tanner, and I like the bloke already. I am sure he's going to get into allsorts of trouble, before the book (series, hopefully?) is finished. And when WW 2 is over, the author can take us back to India, exactley where Sharpe started out soldering as well... Good for the Xmas tree! And with a bit of luck, although Tanner will be a little long in the tooth by then, off to Borneo?
We shall see. ... Read More:

I wasn't entirely sure about this novel. There were many good points - the action sequences were thrilling and the aerial combat a definite high point.

However, I found the writing slightly over-prosaic, over-padded at times, a bit soft round the edges and lacking tautness. Compared with David Fiddimore and Frank Barnard, the novel falls short in terms of military detail, variety of characterisation, tensity of dialogue and overall dramatic suspense. Despite the (inevitable) tragic loss of some major characters, the story all fits together rather too comfortably, too nicely middle-class, and finishes with a rather contrived 'happy' ending. It's simply not as cathartic as it should have been.

Still I am reading more James Holland. ... Read More:

Martin Corrick is a genius wordsmith.
In this, his second book, he explores post-war Britain and Germany, both physically and emotionally from the perspective of the two main characters Lizzie and Charlie.
I laughed and I cried but most of all I came away with a real sense of the time and places about which he writes. The characters are beautifully written and difficult topics are not shied away from.

Beautiful prose.

I highly recommend it - read 'Navigation Log' by the same author first if you get the chance.

In terms of number of words to the pound (sterling) it's hard to beat and a tremendous output for a first novel. There's three books in there! I couldn't find it in me to give it 5 stars, as previous reviewers have, but it is very readable and fun. I was, for want of a better word, confused between what I think are two styles; the self depracating 'Boy's Own' hero and a straight fiction of the Jack Higgins type. The tendency to 'wordiness' is what gives it the period feel and takes away some of the punch that should be there if it is to compete in the Higgins arena. There is a good, plausable plot, enjoyable characters and a good sense of the times, but I kept on wanting to edit it as I read it. The ending, too, is unnecassary and very bitter. Never-the-less, ... Read More:

I don't recall how this ended up on my shelf but decided to try it as a change from my recent run of fast paced stories one can pick up and put down in the midst of a frantic lifestyle. I was drawn in quickly and felt thoughtfully transported to what must have been a truly huge change in life and cultural beliefs, to have to live for now amidst the threat of war on our own shores. I'm hoping my wife will enjoy it as much as I did and bought 2 more copies for her friends! It is heartily recommended. I now fancy trying his other works too.

What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

I studied this period (and this battle in particular) during my history degree in the early 90's and decided that I would delve back in time to remind myself what this was all about. Azincourt was my companion on a return flight to Bahrain recently and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Historically interesting, full of action and detail it really had me turning pages through both flights! When I landed at Gatwick I was disappointed to have to find another book to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a passing interest in medieval history, but it's easily accessible to absolutely anyone who enjoys as good action adventure.
