As a loving and above all responsible parent I felt that this was the perfect reference manual to further my two daughters' education. Having recently caught my 8 year old watching television with most of her hand up one nostril only to be withdrawn and feed the extractions into her mouth below, I felt that the title of this book was relevant, and it seemed to place an emphasis on her health too, which can only be a good thing. The fact of the matter is, there is a lot of genuinely useful information in here. It's all in question-and-answer format, there being 310 in all, and while a lot of them are rather pointless (at least to an adult) there are many that are handy to know and a whole lot that I couldn't answer myself. Brought this for my dyslexic 12-year-old son who normally likes books which have small fact based sentences. He hated this one. Said it was "boring" and "rubbish compared to the Wombats bum book which is fabulous" and he devoured. Possibly a better book for a younger child but we only tried this because of his lower reading age and because of the style of the book - Wrong choice.

My 12 year old son picked this up and read in from front to back in preference to playing computer games - says it all, really! He adored it, but was slightly upset that not all elements were represented. I suggested it would have made it too large and not in the excellent 'pocket book' category, but he is correct that it is not only the wierd and wonderful elements that are missing but some basic ones too. Any chance of a 'Periodic Table Book 2' to fill in some gaps? The subsequent 'Physics: Why Matter Matters' is even better and we can't wait for the Biology one in Oct 2008. Hope the series keeps going!

1 BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR OUR TYPICAL NOT-VERY-INTERESTED IN READING BOYS, AGED 11 AND 9 AND THEY ENDED UP FIGHTING OVER IT AND ARGUING WITH EACH OTHER ON THE SCHOOL TRIP OVER THEIR DIFFERENT RECALL OF THE FASCINATING FACTS THE AUTHOR HAD FOUND FOR THEM. I HAVE FOUND IT A REALLY FANTASTIC BOOK TO GIVE AS BIRTHDAY PRESENTS TOO - ALWAYS WELL RECEIVED BY KIDS AND PARENTS ALIKE - WHICH IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL!! HAVE ALSO BOUGHT THE FOLLOW UP BOOK "WHY EATING BOGEYS IS GOOD FOR YOU" - IN THE HOPE OF SOME PEACE AND QUIET OVER CHRISTMAS!!!

I bought this book for my nephew who doesn't read (his mother said, grumpily). Well, he read this. I gather he was heard chuckling out loud and was happy to let his sisters hog the computer, something that had never happened before. He was even apparently quoting from it in the car to and from school and boasted that he'd managed to impress his form teacher with some facts she wasn't aware of. From being the aunt who sometimes feels she buys the dullest presents, I gather I've rather gone up in the ratings... so I've ordered the other books in the series for my two nieces for Christmas. My sister says it wonderful to think there might even be a day when the computer is actually turned off in their house....

If you like gruesome history and realise how lucky we are today then buy this book by Tony Robinson. This amazing book is ever so hysterical. It will keep you laughing for the whole day. My favourite part was the bleeding tooth fairy. Can you believe that people pulled their tooth out even before pain killers were invented. This book is full of the terrible jobs children had to do. Boys would love this book because it is very grose. Everyone buy this fantastic book sells out. I will buy more of Tony Robinson's books. Well did you know that even grownups messed around. In the first part, he provides a brief history of the development of the science. HISTORY? In a children's book? Well, I suppose everybody is doing it these days - but kudos for introducing the history of science to youngsters. In the following parts, he looks at forces, matter and light (i.e. radiation, in effect). I have had several editions of the Guinness World Records over the years and they have generally had a huge amount of content. This edition is much more like children's enclopedia than a serious books of records. There is much less material than normal and what little there is seemed to have been plucked almost at random and is poorly organised. It may still appeal to children because of the numerous pictues. A few of these are 3D as advertised on the cover, and 3D glasses are included in the book so they can be veiwed. Sport fans may appreciate the tables of sports records which is the only area where any of the formerly comprehensive coverage remains. My grandsons are into yucky things. They now have a pile of the Yuck Encyclopedia, Yuck's Fart Club, Yuck's Big Bogeys, and Gross Records - and they are in heaven. Excellent stuff for just baout eny child in my opinion.
