The plot of this very readable and exciting novel is based on actual historical doubt about the validity of King Henry VIII's claim to the throne. Sansom very convincingly conveys the web of suspicion and fear in which his hero finds himself caught. Torture and execution threaten all who conspire against the King and the novel reveals how complex and dangerous the political and religious situation was.

Also shown is the terrible hardship suffered by ordinary people as a result of the dissolution of the monasteries and the understandable anger against the reformist `southrons' who descend on York as part of The Progress. This picture brings to life the upheaval and excitement caused by King Henry's arrival with 3,000 soldiers, courtiers, ... Read More:

What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

I picked this book up while on tour and read it within a couple of weeks. At first I thought it had potential with the prologue showing the Civil war and focusing on one of the communist soldiers Bernie and then the air raids on London and how the people of London coped with this. However once the character goes to Madrid the plot slows right down and then doesn't seem to pick up again until the end and the plot twist, which I won't ruin for you.
I think the book is worth a read just for the historical value. It does show how bad the civil war was in Spain and if like me you don't know much about that part of history it does explain a lot.
By far not the best book I have read but still enjoyable

I personally loved this book. It is not a particularly (if at all) 'intellectual' book - it is a romance and thriller novel that spans so many pages it manages to find itself wound up as a tome of a book.

Nevertheless, if you are going on a trip or find yourself needing something to read, give this a try. It is not as difficult as it may appear, and, quite fun!

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

Having read my copy of "Pillars of The Earth" at least 4 times, I just had to get the follow-up.
Stainding over 1000 pages, its not a tome to pick on a whim, but its another superb travel through historical England. (Don't panick if you still haven't experienced the magnificent "Pillars", as the characters are a few generations on).
Any fans of historical fiction will love this tale of love, deceit and heart-ache. Throw in some meaty action, add some pestilence and suffering, and you're left with a book that will keep you enthralled and captivated.
I loved it. 5 stars once again for Follett!!

I studied this period (and this battle in particular) during my history degree in the early 90's and decided that I would delve back in time to remind myself what this was all about. Azincourt was my companion on a return flight to Bahrain recently and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Historically interesting, full of action and detail it really had me turning pages through both flights! When I landed at Gatwick I was disappointed to have to find another book to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a passing interest in medieval history, but it's easily accessible to absolutely anyone who enjoys as good action adventure.

8.The Alehouse Murders (Templar Knight Mysteries) (Templar Knight Mysteries) by: Maureen Ash

The beginning of the 13th century - just the period I love to read about. Ms. Ash is a fine storyteller with a knack for description and an intriguing plot - but the story lost me when she introduced what I'll call "crystal voodoo." Not a problem that people might have believed in the efficacy of crystals at the time, but the attribution of true magical powers to them took the story out of historic novel/mystery and into a realm where I couldn't suspend disbelief. A disappointment.

I started enthusiastically enough - after reading the back cover and normally loving historical novels I thought this would be a book to relish. The initial descriptions of London were powerful and enthralling but I might as well have stopped after the first dozen pages as it degenerated into a weak plotted, characterless but "nasty" little book. If I wanted to read about drug addicts and animal torturers but don't enjoy following a plot that is at least believable I would have been chuffed with my choice of book - but as that isn't my normal literary entertainment I completely wasted my money. My husband did only get about twenty pages in (without knowing my opinion)and chucked it in the bin.
My advice - don't bother, buy something else, it's not worth a quid let alone all the paper it wasted. Quite simply the ... Read More:
