The 3rd of Annie Hawes books, this one sees her and her Calabrese fidanzato heading south to his ancestrial home of Calabria. A great book and I love that you feel that you know the whole family. Being half Calabrese, and having a Calabrese fidanzato myself I really could appreciate all she was writing about.
All 3 of her books are my all time favourites.

I read most of this book beside a pool in Sicily on a sad singleton's holiday and it was nigh on the best company and travel guide for the trip. It would have conjured the warmth, beauty and passion of the island on a cold winter day in Dorset but the poolside was good. If anyone is thinking of travelling to Sicily you must read this gem. So much useful and witty information.
I immediately fell for Matthew, we are of an age, and his descriptions of trials and tribulations on the way touched my heart. This is an honest, funny, laugh out loud joy of a book. The recipes are spot on too and you could and should eat your way around the island. Suddenly you realise how bad our ingredients are and how we have lost our way with food on a day to day ... Read this book whilst on holiday in Liguria - quite appropriate considering this is the subject of this outstanding novel by Annie Hawes. It tells the tale of an English woman who has relocated to a little cottage in the hills above Diano Marina, just along the coast from Imperia, in the charmingly un-exploited region of Liguria, Italy. Superbly written, very funny and, as I can personally attest, and accurate portrayal of Ligurian life. This is one of the 'happiest' books I've read in a long time. Thoroughly recommended.

An enjoyable light read which conjures up the warm south. For me there wasn't quite enough depth of any single aspect. I'd have been happy to read a whole book on the history of Gascony, or a more detailed story of the family. Jacques-Henri's unexplained disappearance is very unsatisfactory in view of the fact that he was one of the most likeable and rounded characters.

On the whole I felt that most of the characters were very thinly drawn. Anya in particular is very two-dimensional; apart from her physical attractiveness (and the fact that he chooses her from a selection of one) there is nothing to explain why Martin falls for her, and the way the romance peters out seems to confirm the vacuity of the relationship. Pattes gives a more ... Read More:

what a lovely read this is, nicely suprising & not at all like the usual "year in a foreign country" type stuff. The stories of the Ligurian way of thinking "no swimming in the sea except in the height of summer - this brings on Flu"......"germans who horror of horror drink wine WITHOUT FOOD!!! GASP GASP"...."bottled wine is akin to poison & not even made from grapes".......Its also interesting that this was set many many years ago...before we all ate olive oil/sundried tomatoes/olives/tomatoes on the vine etc etc as a matter of course....funny & laigh out loud...i have since bought her next book & will be enjoying that very soon

This is one of the most cheery books I've read this year. It's a very funny and witty take on living between two entirely different places. The characters are wonderful and at times rather scary. I read an interview with the author and she said that every London character was thinly disguised so that she wouldn't get sued...no wonder she upped sticks and escpaed to Mallorca with clients like that! The lyrical passages about rural Mallorca are beautiful and she has a wicked sense of irony and fun which makes the whole book a great read if you're trying to beat the economic gloom and doom. Read it. It really is a tonic for our times.

This is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in Morocco. This book is about two foreigners who decide to buy an old house in the medina in Fez and bring it back to its former glory. The author uses her knowledge of Moroccan culture and history as she writes. She is honest but not condesending. She writes about the people she meets along the way. I read it before I went back to Morocco and it made me very keen to go back. I would love to read more from this author.

Having been treated to both of the narrow dog books I find myself hoping the Darlington's survive yet another adventure so that I can read the third in the Trilogy and perhaps even, in the style of the hitchhikers guide, the fourth!
The book focuses on the story of the adventure and cuts the technical detail so dear to the hearts of all boaters. For me this makes it really enjoyable, as I can picture the dust, wires and pipes strewn across a narrow aisle for 3 weeks as the battle to cool the cabin progresses. What it really does is open your eyes to the possibility of doing something a bit different. For many of us the idea of getting older is almost as daunting as taking our beloved craft out of the marina and into a lock where we could sustain a scratch or God ... Read More:

I bought this book after reading, and enjoying "The House At Riverton" - Morton's first novel. I was slightly apprehensive about "The Forgotten Garden" having read mixed reviews, but I found this book incredibly enthralling! I found it very easy to get into, and found i needed to read more and more - i had to find out what happened. This is a classic mystery, and one i whole heartedly recomend.

I have just finished reading this book for the 3rd time, and am sure I will be reading it again soon. Adamoli is a great writer and you really feel as though you are in the beautiful seaside village with her. You are there when she discovers it, and you are there years later when the tourist trade is taking over.
She also has a little reciepe at the start of each chapter which is a nice idea! If you love reading books about Italy but are sick of the 'Under the Tuscan Sun' type books then this is for you!
