We were told by our university that this was a highly recommened book, and they weren't wrong. If you are studying Early Years and want a book that covers services, policy,practice and diversity within Early Years then this is a good book to start with. Easy to read, you'll probably find what you are looking for.

A clear and well set out book detailing approximately 20 theorists who have had influences in the way we approach early years education. I would normally dip in and out of text books but this one I was happy to read as it's set out in such a undemanding and informative way. The book is set out with headings about each theorist's; - Life and upbringing - Books and writing - Their theory - How those theories have been put into practise and their influence The author also critiques the theories and provides web sites and books to find out more about each one. As a CCLD Level 4 student, I was advised to buy this book by my tutor. Although at first I found the book a bit daunting to look at, it has turned out to be invaluable. As a Early Years Practitioner I really recommend it. It is not only useful for my coursework, but my day to day work too.

An excellent book ideal for any practitioner who may want to go into leadership or managerial work in children's services. The book explains the legislation and policies which need to be in place and which alongside managers work. It also tells us who to effectively manage staff and the skills and qualities that are required in order to become a manager or a leader in early years. Also explains the legislation such as the children Act (1989) and disability discrimation Act (1995) plus aother major legislation. A brilliant resource book which all practitioners should own despite what areas they want to go into within early years.

This is a great, easy to read and well organised book. Fisher provides some great chapters including the role of the adult, the place of play, the importance of working with others, planning, learning and the curriculum and the high scope approch. Im studying a degree in Early Childhood Studies and found this book usefull for my module the early childhood curriculum. I think everyone working with children will find this book usefull, as Fisher always refers back to clasroom practice. This is a must have book.

If you are in teacher training or entering teacher training specialising in the Early Years you MUST buy this book! It provides excellent answers to the questions you have in your mind. This book is the most quotable book I own! Actually, I find it difficult to pick a single sentence to quote in assignments at universty. I find myself including a chunk (which i shouldn't but it is simply too good!!) If you are new to the early years this gives you an excellent introduction. If you work in the early years or are studying it you need this because it provides excellent theories and opinons from top academics. Just trust me - its well worth the money!!
