I am currently doing a intermediate level of italian but find it always useful to remember the key verbs. I have used a lot of italian books in order to understand italian and this one explains and does what it says ''drills'' those verbs into your mind with a good set of exercises. A well organized easy to understand book perfect for beginners of Italian! I would seriously recommend it.

This is an amazing item, I have tried many diferent techniques to learn Italian and this is by far the best. I really do encourage you to buy this you won't regret it. The voices used are really good as well, they saying everything clearly allowing you to understand quicker. The music is also an added bonus it allows the words to stick in your brain faster, and makes the experience alot more enjoyable. With this product its not a matter of having to use it, but you want to use it. Fantastic.

I am enjoying this book and finding it very helpful, but think it would be pretty scary for a complete beginner to start with. Often the reader is required to give opposites of words which are not in the text being studied, and often there are words which need to be understood in order to answer the questions, but there is no translation given. I think this is frustrating for the reader. Surely the point of a graded reader is that the student doesn't have to keep reaching for a dictionary, thus breaking the flow of the reading and learning? I am managing by ignoring the words I don't know in order to keep the flow going, as I imagine I'll pick them up at some other stage along the way. Good for very confident post-beginners or pre-intermediates ... Read More:

Written in a sloppy and thoughtless style. E.g. On page 5 the learner is introduced to two sentences: 'Seals love to play' and 'Bats are mammals.'
This is redolent of the infamous nineteenth-century travellers' guide which offered 'My postillion has been struck by lightning' as a useful phrase to memorise.
It is also full of careless mistakes e.g. on page 8 we are taught that 'a sinistra' means 'on the right.'
Pulp it!

This recently published handbook (2002) is an excellent guide to the Italian language (grammar and verbs), and it also fits into your pocket for portability and easy access.

Some of the topics included are: Spelling, Nouns, Adjectives, Pronouns, etc. with sections on Counting and Measuring, Talking about time and places. Verbs are covered in two sections - regular verbs and a large list of irregular verbs at the end of the book.

Examples are clearly marked in bold. An example from the section on Imperatives, the Italian and English are displayed as: la macchina! / your car! (The <..> are to show the bold words in the text. These characters do not appear themselves).

Another example in the same section ... Read More:

I'm studying Italian at undergraduate level from scratch. I was struggling to keep up with what I was being taught and so I bought this book. It's really useful. Everything is clearly explained, there's lots of exercises to help you to practice what you have just learned and the answers to the exercises are in the back of the book. I'd recommend this book to anyone studying Italian academically or even if you just want to learn the language for fun.

This is an excellent reference book.

The use and meanings of each of the Italian tenses are explained at the beginning of the book, with examples.

Each of the 555 verbs is listed in alphabetical order, with a whole page (i.e. one side) each, with the verb clearly conjugated in, full, as promised. Below the conjugation are examples of usage, with idioms and related words where relevant. 50 of the most common verbs (often the most irregular and/or most idiomatic) have a second page devoted to examples.

Following the verbs are some exercises with answers to aid learning.

Finally, there is not one, but three indices: an English to Italian verbs index; an index of irregular Italian verb forms, which is ... Read More:

This can't make up its mind whether to be primarily an English-Italian dictionary for English people; or an Italian-English-dictionary for Italian people. Ultimately it ends up being neither.

The English-Italian section is absolutely fine...as are the 'Lexical Notes' outlining such useful area as weights/measures; the calendar; spelling and punctuation etc that divide the two sections.

Where it starts to go wrong for me is the Italian-English section, with big key explanatory chunks written in Italian - ie to help Italian readers get to grips with important English terminology. This diminishes a vital area of the dictionary's use.

At the end of the Italian-English section, there's another very useful 'Lexicon' ... Read More:

This is a useful little book, well aimed at school-level students of written Italian. The stories are by well known names, some very famous (e.g. Primo Levi). As works of literature, they are not all particularly inspiring. However, if you have the stomach to read about the somewhat disgusting sex-lives of unclean peasants (as occurs in one story), then it is fine.

A strong point is the notes about idiomatic usages, some of which are very useful, and indeed illuminating about life in modern Italy. I can confirm the accuracy of these notes.

Recommendable, on the whole. Indeed, I hope that the author will continue, and give us further volumes.

This dictionary is very good value for money, and fine for most purposes, but I have found its vocabulary limited when working with some very mildly technical areas. Also if you don't have a basic knowledge of Italian, it isn't a lot of help with word endings etc. - there is a list of regular and irregular verbs in the back, but this is very concise and of limited help. For example, if you know no Italian, and look up the word 'vieni' you won't find it, and you don't know that you need to look under 'venire'.
I guess most users will probably have some basic Italian, and would find this a useful and adequate, lightweight and small paperback dictionary. For anyone with no Italian and/or a need for moderately specialist or technical vocabulary, I would ... Read More:
