This text book was recommended to me by my history teacher and it has been very useful as i have covered the 2nd yr of the Italian Unit. All the important aspects of Mussolini's dictatorship are covered well in this book, particularly the economy which i feel can be a difficult area to understand.

I would definately recommend it as a course aid and a good basis for revision, it's well worth the money.

In this book, Professor Alan White points out six institutional features of Italian Fascism. The first was the existence of an official ideology covering all aspects of social existence which envisaged the society as moving towards a final state of man. This chiliastic doctrine legitimized the means to achieve that end and involved a radical rejection of the existing order. The second was a single, hierarchically organized mass party led by one man. The third one was a system of terroristic police control directed against the enemies of the regime. The fourth one was a technologically conditioned monopoly of the means of mass communications. The fifth one was a monopoly of force. The final one was the central control and direction of the entire ... Read More:

A compelling read.
Basically this is a beautifully written potted history of "Il Duce," from small violent child to big violent fascist.
Intelligent, mesmerising, gifted, a vicious rapist and serial womaniser, but the right man at the right time. All of these things - from peasant to leader in ten years - the world's original fascist who never quite dropped his socialist roots, and due to his ability to change direction more than once in a single day, eventually stood for nothing.
Seriously, this wasn't a man ever tied by ideology, he had none. He was everything to everyone, then eventually nothing to anyone. The ultimate opportunist, when you read this you'll understand why there was only ever likely to be one outcome.

As a chronicle of Fascist Italy, this book is very good. An impressive blend of political, economic, and military history which displays Fascist Italy effectively and thoroughly. The only problem is that the author tends to go into great detail about countless different characters (many of whom had no direct involvement in the drive of the regime) and thus it sometimes feels like one is reading a dictionary of Fascist supporters rather than a cohesive history of the period. Nonetheless, the book has been very well researched and is a gem for all who have an interest in the Duce and his era.

I have found this book helpful for both my AS and A2 options on Stalinist Russia. Has questions and answers from past A-Level papers, which I found tremendously useful. In addition, the book concentrates on the A-Level syllabus rather than adding unnecessary waffle - great to use throughout the course!

As a student studying A-Level i found Mussolini quite challenging, however as i received this book today at sixth form browsing through it this evening has made learning about the unusual dictator much easier. For someone who struggles with getting to grips of A-Level History (as i do!) this is a must read book. With key questions to help you think about relevant subjects linked to the chapters it's also able to give students a much wider outlook and extra information to put to good use in exams. I am so pleased that i received this book today, the subject seems clearer to me now due to this helpful book.

A-Level and AS students may well know this already - but buy, beg or borrow your own copy as soon as you can. Clear, concise narratives and careful explanation of historical opinion make this an essential text for anyone studying Germany and/or Italy in the 20th century. The author has pitched this book at exactly the right level for sixth-formers, although the general reader would enjoy this too. Highly recommended.
