I always read each of P D James's books as it is published and quickly come to the same conclusion each time: although her books are well-plotted, she has a rare talent for populating them with characters that it is very difficult to relate to, whom we never really get inside the skin of, and who are universally dislikeable.

Dalgliesh, Miskin and Benton are far too cold and clinical - they either spend time focussed 100% on the case or else they ruminate on their personal lives in isolation. We never see them let their hair down, enjoy themselves or exchange the odd irreverent or humourous comment that is the difference between a robot and a human being.

Maybe the only poignant moment is when the potential suspect whose ... Read More:

First Sentence: If Ronnie Wilson had known, as he woke up, that in just a couple of hours he would be dead,, he would have planned his day somewhat differently.

Perpetually failed businessman Ronnie Wilson happens to be in New York City on September 11, 2001. Rather than seeing the tragedy around him, he sees it as a way to disappear from his past.

In present day, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is called to a crime scene where the skeletal remains of a woman have been found. Grace first hopes/fears it could be the remains of his wife, Sandy, who disappeared nine years ago. Instead, the woman is identified as having been the wife of first wife of Ronnie Wilson.

About the same time, the body of a woman is ... Read More:

I loved the first three in this series and this one, eagerly-anticipated as it was, didn't disappoint. I agree that it's more about Simon than the case, but if the reader has read the first three before this one that shouldn't be too much of a problem, and the case is gripping enough to carry the main story, that of the Serraillier family. Ah yes, the Serrailliers. Well, Simon is as aloof as ever and we hardly know him any better after this book; the story of his father's new relationship makes it clear that the deceased Meriel may not have been quite the saint Simon thinks she was; and although I was shocked at the main family development here, in a nasty sort of way I wasn't sorry to see Cat shaken out of her comfortable rut. One plea to SH - do something ... Read More:

It is a long time since I read my last Frost novel and I'd forgotten just how good these books are. With great characters and inter-twining plots, this book is the nearest I've come to un-put-downable in a long time and ranks alongside the very best crime fiction. This was a book that I was truly sad to finish.

As always, really looking forward to the latest Tempe tome. Really wish I hadn't bothered. Characters didn't seem to care much about what was happening, and neither did I. Ryan turns up and......what happens? Well, nothing. Tempe attacked and hospitalised, does Katy turn up to see her? No. Unless you just want to collect a 'set' of Reichs novels, skip this one. Did I mention that it was also rather depressing/ Not in content, but in tone and style. Avoid.

I am a huge fan of Karen Slaughter and was really looking forward to this book but I must say it does not leave up to the standard of her previous books, was interesting at the beginning but becam a bit boring towards the end. I have not given up on Karen though, I am not tooo sure about Will Trents character.

I've always thought that Val McDermid's has a journalist's grasp of the chapter as a literary form but until now she has always compensated with good storylines and interesting characters.
As well as being lacking in literary style, this book contains all the psychological agonies of the Brannigan novels plus the snappy humour of the Tony Hill novels, which together with a weak plot make it one of her poorest novels to date.
I think Ms McDermid has been watching far too much TV.
I got 'A Darker Domain' from the library and wouldn't bother buying it for my McDermid collection until it arrives in paperback at the nearly-new shop.
Maybe it will improve on a second reading.

What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

I am a great Sue Grafton fan but thought her last two novels were not up to standard, particularly R is for Ricochet. However her latest book is simply great, hugely gripping and a real page turner. I loved the new style with chapters going back and forth between Kinsey and the evil "care provider". It was very gratifying that Ms Grafton brought Kinsey's landlord very much into the story as he has been neglected of late. I have always loved the contribution made by Henry and his siblings. This is a real return to form and I have bought the hardback as a Christmas present for my niece and hope to convert her to Sue Grafton. I would have no hesitation in recommending this novel to anyone who has not yet discovered Ms. Grafton. It is a true demonstration of Sue Grafton's writing skills ... Read More:
