There are two things you need to know about this book. Firstly, it is a (literally) shocking expose about the power, reach, spread and influence of the Comorra, the Naples mafia. It names names, it gives details. It's staggering. It's also laughable in places - when he recounts how a lot of the younger mafiosi can no longer shoot straight, because they'er copying how they hold guns in the movies and rap videos, and the capo who builds himself an copy of Tony Montana's villa.

But the second thing you need to know is that it's really badly written. I don't know if it's the original or the translation - maybe both - but the prose is breathless and florid. Passages need to be read and reread to understand what he's going on ... Read More:

If this book had been around 5 years ago, when I first started reading about organised crime, I could have avoided many titles that used fabricated, exaggerated and/or simply recycled information. As it is, I have read dozens of historic accounts concerning the Italian-American crime groups (Mafia, La Cosa Nostra) and Reppetto's book still informed me of facts and events I had not yet read.
Its well written without becoming too scholarly and stuffy but, at the same time, it does not sacrifice truth in aid of a better story. A real pleasure to read!
If your just starting to read about the mob then this is a God send! It will provide an invaluable all-round knowledge on the subject and leave you with an understanding what I had to read ... Read More:

An in - depth almost chronological account of New Yorks five mafia families and their Godfathers, written as though the author was there when it all happened. Intricate details and accounts of murders, court cases, family fueds and criminal enterprises, described by figuregeads from both the Mafia and the numerous law - enforcement agencies make this an exceptional book.

I like reading about dedicated experts in a particular field. In this case, Judges Falcone and Borsellino, and others, taking on the mafia. It really is an interesting, shocking and moving story.

This is actually one of the books on the Mafia you SHOULD get. The main strong point being it's ability to explain the background of the mafia. It's also well written, this is good "story telling".

If you get this you should complement it with "Excellent Cadavers" by Alexander Stille. Together they give you enough information to navigate further. Both of them deal with the Sicilian mafia, but concentrate on different periods.

I got this for my brother because he's loves gangster films so much but read it anyway - have to say it's a really funny little book. It shows you the facial expressions and hand gestures you need to properly disrespect people on the street and get your way. Also has funny role plays for the different situations you'll find yourself in as a mafia beginner, and tells you the genuine Italian expressions that might come in handy (never know when you're going to want to say "I'll smash your face in" in Italian).
I'd reccommend for anyone who's seen the Godfather a few too many times and kind of wishes he was in it.

if your looking for an in depth look into the life of joey massino then this book not of much use, instead it briefly looks at probably the most significante parts of his life. it does skip alot but is still a good book to read.

This is an excellent book, but although there's some original stuff, it's really more a synthesis of the works of others than anything else. While Robb pulls it all together extremely well, he fails to attribute his sources adequately, using italics in an awkward and, for a reader, distracting fashion where he quotes other writers. He also neglects to relate specific quotes to their sources, which may have been an editorial decision intended not to put off the more casual readers. Nevertheless, this makes for a frustrating read at times. I kept seeing the work of Norman Lewis, in his riveting and beautifully written book The Honoured Society, quoted here without any direct attribution, and returned to that book often as I was reading Robb's. Lewis is far better, ... Read More:

This book provides a wonderful birds-eye view into the early Cosa Nostra. Well- written and well-researched by the author, he skillfully organizes the thoughts of Joe Valachi, a racketeer and soldier in the Cosa Nostra from way back when. Valachi's reminiscences of the mob of the nineteen twenties through the nineteen sixties come alive for the reader in the expert hands of the author, an award winning investigative journalist. It is a cohesive, interesting, and painstakingly detailed account of life in the Cosa Nostra.

This was one of the first such insider accounts of the Cosa Nostra, and it almost never got written, as the federal government sought to bar the author from writing and publishing such a book. The author, however, took on the federal government ... Read More:

An eye-opening look at how the globalisation of organised crime effects day-to-day life-whether we like it or not.

The timing of the liberalistion of the international financial markets and the coincidental collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe and the USSR means that the face of crime has changed for ever.

And as the author points out, so long as the profits are so big and demands for illegal products so high, no amount of policing can ever stamp it out. In fact, the more resources poured in to the "War on Crime", the bigger organised crime becomes......
