I was given this book as a present for Christmas by my family. Within the last year, I have developed a true love of nature, so this seemed like the perfect gift. To be honest, looking at the Amazon page, I am quite surprised that THE NATURE OF BRITAIN has received such mixed reviews. One has said that the book is not definitive - well, perhaps this is the case, but it is meant to be a celebration of our landscape and our wildlife, and in this sense it is a triumph.

The book is divided into different sections covering different habitats; woodland, coast and islands, fields and meadows etc. Similar to the BBC series which accompanies this book, there are glorious colour photographs to bring to life what is being described.

I defy even Scrooge (or Mr T's harshest critic) not to raise a smile with this one. Jane Austen and J M Barrie would be proud. Well possibly! A mixture of traditional Xmas stories and songs, with some of the funniest 'versions' of popular literature and panto. Some of it is lucky to be in print! If you have a sense of humour, this is most definitely for you.

This is a little gem of a book; I bought it thinking it would give me helpful ways of knowing and remembering more about grammar - but it's so much more than this.

The whole book is about mnemonics and rhymes as memory aids, grouped into 17 themed categories as listed in the contents page, which is viewable on the 'Search Inside' feature.

This book is ideal for flicking open and dipping into whatever page it lands on as it not only cites fascinating facts/trivia it also provides the means for remembering them!

To give a flavour of the diversity of information in this book, here's a rhyme which caught my attention (I hope the information's accurate!) on what's good to choose for firewood:

Beautiful programmme. I'd like to know if the DVD set will have subtitles, can anyone tell me please? Unfortunately Amazon dont seem particularly interested in giving this information for the benefit of deaf and HOH - about a quarter of the population!

Because this book is a bit on the large side and has some fantastic photos it seems to double as a coffee table book and an instruction manual . Its an excellent book and Alan Titchmarsh is at his best here .

The first sixty or so pages is concerned with what Alan calls the ground rules and you get advice on everything from planning and design to feeding and composting . The rest of the book contains the directory where you get a run down on all the common fruit veg and herbs found in most gardens . Now this is pretty comprehensive so expect a little information overload . But personally I think its great to have all this info under the one cover . Definitely a book I will continue to refer to again and again .

Alan Bennett has discovered a latent royalist tendency with this little gem, Her Majesty being portrayed as, in this one respect at least - a reader, nay devourer of books, whatever next - just like us. It won't do, can't be allowed actually. I chuckled and chortled and laughed out loud and was cheering every successful subterfuge. It's a book that makes you feel good.

"Eating for England" is a Pick n' Mix of a book. Read it all in one go and it gets repetitive and downright indigestible. But there are a few sweet and well-written little pieces within that make the book worthwhile. I would not really recommend this to anyone under 30 or over 65: and if you are the sort of person who is quickly bored by 40-somethings reminiscing about BBC children's programs of the 1960s or long-vanished crisp flavours, then you should give it a miss, too.

Where Nigel Slater's book rises above the standard nostalgia-trip, it does so because he can write well on occasions and his genuine love of food comes through. But there were far too many instances when a well-written piece was followed by yet another push for Farmers' Markets or another ... Read More:

I have just started reading this book, what a great read. Alan Titchmarsh can write very well. I love the characters and the story and I have guessed how it will go. I can't put this book down either i am on chapter 13 already in two days and can't wait to see how the rest of the story goes. Well written Mr Titchmarsh i think this would do excellent as a film or play and certainly a sequel would be in order here

Along with G Meehan I find the errors irritating having found two more in the first 24 pages.
One is often repeated and may be considered trivial by many - the line from Gray's Elegy (page 18)
The lowing herd winds slowly o'er the lea,
True, several websites print this version but they may well be just
copies of other sites.
Reputable poetry sites and Oxford University's Gray archive print the version that also appears in the Oxford Book of English Verse:
The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea,

Yes, it does seem odd, but if that's what Gray wrote, that's what should appear.
The editors at the publishers, if not the author, should be capable of spotting this.

A far less trivial error is the statment on page 21 that Terry ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick and easy read, admittedly, but it does not bill itself as a Shakepeare textbook or biography and would be a different animal if it was. If you take it at face value, it's a fun read, helped along by Bryson's amusing style.
