The unusual form of the book, each chapter relating to an element of the periodic table (not every element is included), to tell the tale of a chemist's life is highly effective. The content reinforces the form and the form the content to give a really high quality novel.

This was our group's favorite book by a modest lead over Lolita and The Master and Margarita. It is beautiful and moving and much more enjoyable than his good but harrowing Auschwitz tales.

Please do not be put off by the slow start - Argon is a very thin, rare gas and this chapter is one of the least engaging perhaps for that reason. Iron was most people's favorite element.

My review of 'Mila 18' by Leon Uris seems to have got lost somewhere in cyberspace. Never mind. If you want to read a book about a group of Jews fighting back during WWII, this one is much better, anyway. It starts rather slowly, but as more characters are introduced, a tapestry of pictures and stories emerge from what begins as a rather grey fabric. By the end of the book they had become my family. They are a small band of men and a few women who carry on small scale guerilla warfare on the German side of the eastern front during the Russian advance across eastern Europe. They tramp from White Russia, through the Pripet Marshes, through Poland and Germany, eventually ending up in post-war Italy. They fight no great battles, and are under ... Read More:

A great work, but 'Survival in Auschwitz' is just the American name for 'If This Is A Man', which is published in Britain together with 'The Truce' in a single volume. Amazon has it, and it's better value as well as a better title.

Primo Levi is not just (just!) one the world's great witnesses to the Holocaust and a brilliant writer, his own personal story is extraordinary too and very much of its time. This wonderful biography deals, simply and with enormous fluency, with so many important issues. It gave me an insight into Italy's role in the war, for example - as well as how families functioned and communities evolved during those difficult times. It doesn't shrink from the horrors of the Holocaust but does not wallow in them either. Levi's experience of being a concentration camp survivor long after the war was over, is in its own way almost as painful as his time at Auschwitz. Only others who had had the same, or similar experiences, could help him rebalance his life - and not many ... Read More:

This is the first book I have read by Primo Levi; and I am filled with admiration for his celebration of the innate goodness of man, which shows itself in ways which are strange to us (today) living in an organised and civilised society. There is contained throughout this book the constant expectation and feeling of "hope".

Primo Levi again shows the magic of his writing in this tale of the purgatory he experienced after his liberation from Auschwitz. His memories of the people he meets along the way and the way he describes them are amazing, whether you hate them or love them they all seem ... human, something one couldn't exactly tell from his account of the camp itself. Truly a brilliant book.

I love Primo Levi, but most of the stories in this collection are dull and should have stayed filed with his papers. The only exception, I think, is "The Sorcerers".

For a non medical person some of the terms used where a little tricky however the bibliography helped. A review of the appalling conditions, illnesses suffered and in-sufficient treatments made available to inmates of one of Auschwitz' camps. I read this prior to reading "If This Is A Man" and "The Truce" by Primo Levi - I think by understanding that what would seem a small injury could be potentially life threatening due to the circumstances being endured, it gave me a better understanding of the following books.

Truly the worst holocaust testimony ever written. So many mistakes throughout the whole text. Two examples of which were when Mr Muller mentions the camp orchestra in Birkenau, there was none, it was in Auschwitz 1.He also quotes that Kramer was in Birkenau and had came from Auschwitz 2.Both are one and the same place But important errors like these were repeated in every chapter and the worry for me is that Holocaust deniers may pick up on these simple blunders.Mr Mullers over use of adjectives and repetition of statements at times resulted in the book bordering on being boring. It read more like a students written essay who wasnt fully informed ,rather than an actual Holocaust survivors memoirs.Ive read many more imformative Holocaust testimonies and even Mr Muller must have been ...
