I ordered this book when i reached breaking point. Unlike other self-help books it wasn't too Americanized and gave plenty of examples of men and women who couldn't cope due to family disputes and manipulation.
This book gave me the courage to face up to my difficult mother and deal with other painful memories. I also saw a therapist so the two things meant i could move on and start living MY life. Hurrah. A great book.

I really dislike reading self help books that are filled with case stories of people to illustrate the content of the chapter. Following a phone call from my father where he disinherited me in the blink of an eye because I would not do as he told me to do. At the age of 38, I realised that they had controlled me all my life and I had finally had enough. But with the realisation came alot of second guessing from my side (which is typical for kids who were bought up controlled) and I wanted to read a book that gave me a deeper insight into what I was going through.I was to read Toxic Parents but decided to read this book first, but was very disappointed that 2/3 of the material was simple case studies, which really annoyed me. Although I could identify ... Read More:

I liked this book more than some others on the subject as it dealt with aspects of self-development and the future, rather than just helping to identify the problem. Before reading it, I had reached the decision that I would never see my parents again but I can now see several ways to deal with their behaviour if I meet them at family events. This can be useful if you want to continue to have a relationship with other family members who don't realise that there is a problem.

This book has the wrong title. It sounds like a 'How to' book but it's much more than that. You get a rare insight into other people's psychology and the ways they deal with their own relationships with their mothers. Some are famous, some unknown but all are fascinating. And it's mainly through those insights that we as readers can analyse our own relationships with our mothers and alamost always learn something new. The authors have a lively style, unstuffy and fluent, and it's a joy to read. Because it's so easy to read you can get through it quite quickly but it's worth returning to because some of the content is quite profound.

First I read Adult Children: Secrets of Dysfunctional Families. A great book to read everytime you feel "different" from the rest of the world! And then came this book: having completed my intensive 1-week psychotherapy for A.Children, and not having read any books on the adult child isssue before, I found this book to be precise, straight forward and realistic.
This book easily explains the origins and repeated patterns of adult child behaviour, processes that may have led to addictions (alcohol, work, food and other), and the essential personal work to lead one to the root of the problem. I certainly found this book helpful towards the road to recovery.

This book has to be one of my all time favourites. Straightforward and easy to read. The liberator from the pain of family dysfunction is education, and this book provides the guidelines to understanding why you thought you were going crazy but didn't know why.

This book takes you on a journey through your past, and most people will find at least some information in the book that will ring true in their own lives. Narcissism is rampant in our society, and many of us have been affected by this in one way or another. It's the kind of book made for people who are seriously looking to understand their family of origin issues and how to move forward in a healthy way. It does take some work to get through but it's well worth the effort.

I was really enjoying reading this book and thinking how good it was when I came accross the bit that talks about Autism, I was shocked and disgusted to read they were basically blaming the parents for causing their childs Autism. This is an outdated and depressing view. I hope the revised edition has changed this.

In purchasing this book I had two aims firstly, I wanted to be able to identify whether the person I was dating did in fact have narcissistic personality disorder, as I suspected and secondly, I wanted an informative text that would provide ideas on what I could do to help. What I found in Lowen's text was a mixture of what I was looking for mixed with a whole lot of Freudian-esque theory. Lowen, an expert on Narcissism, writes for the general reader allowing anyone access to complex ideas and theories surrounding this particular disorder however, he buries his really interesting information among a load of speculation, theorising and philosophizing on aspects of Freudian discourses and this is, for me, a major turnoff. It was very disappointing to have started the book on a high, reading ... Read More:
