I am really interested in the Mitford Sisters so I have been really looking forward to getting this book. It was much bigger than I expected but was very enjoyable. I admit that I got a bit bored with all the footnotes and about half-way through just started to ignore them unless I was really confused. Through the letters you get to see life from their many different perspectives, it really made me think of the relationship that I have with my own sister and the many times that we have seen the same situation in very different ways. I would recommend this book to people even if they are not a fan of the Mitfords- it gives a really good insight into that period of history.

I read his book after hearing it on BBC radio 4 Book of the week. I had never heard of the author but he no doubt got publicity because he was a speech writer for Mrs Thatcher.

If he isn't related to someone famous he knows them either through his relatives or as a result of going to Eton and working for Mrs Thatcher.

His mother is Lady Julia Pakenham and knew the Mitford sisters. Neither of his parents ever worked . One of his uncles was Anthony Powell of Dance to the Music of time fame who knew George Orwell.

Her admits that he only got jobs through influence . Every time he ever applied for a job he failed his only avenue of survival was personal recommendation . He lived on the oxygen of influence.

As a great collector of all things Vita Sackville-West, Harold Nicolson and Sissinghurst, I leapt on this book as it appeared. But did I really need it? Surely I have read everything printed about Sissinghurst, Vita and Harold, and visited the garden twice, what could it give me? Well for a start Adam Nicolson writes with more facility, imagination and poetry than either of his famous grand parents. A poetic grace, so beautifully expressed, that Vita would have killed to have had. Yes this is prose and not poetry, but Nicolson, like Virginia Woolf can make prose sound like poetry. In this book Nicolson re-examines Sissinghurst from its historic beginnings, to its "decline" to a tourist attraction. His dealings with the National Trust are fascinating, and believable. ... A superb investigation into the mysteries within the family that lived at Wentworth Woodhouse but so much more than that too.
Catherine Bailey tells the story of a once mighty British industry from all sides, the rich and powerful, the Government, the military and of course the workers and their families. All of this against the secrets and sadness behind a once great estate. The research is incredible and the author constantly leads you down little side tracks from the main tale and they are truly fascinating.
I have visited the grounds of Wentworth since childhood and often stared at the enormous frontage and wondered what stories that house could tell. Catherine will let you in on just some of them and if you have any interest in the social and industrial ... Read More:

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

I always read each of P D James's books as it is published and quickly come to the same conclusion each time: although her books are well-plotted, she has a rare talent for populating them with characters that it is very difficult to relate to, whom we never really get inside the skin of, and who are universally dislikeable.

Dalgliesh, Miskin and Benton are far too cold and clinical - they either spend time focussed 100% on the case or else they ruminate on their personal lives in isolation. We never see them let their hair down, enjoy themselves or exchange the odd irreverent or humourous comment that is the difference between a robot and a human being.

Maybe the only poignant moment is when the potential suspect whose car was seen near the standing stones ... Read More:

This is a lovely book and so easy to read. The other review tells you the story so I have no need to do the same except to say it is a delightful memoir of a childhood in Cornwall between the wars.
I loved it too!

If we think that it's a new thing, the way that the gutter press and gossip mags now are obsessed with celebrity, we're wrong. The Bright Young People were there first. I bought this book after reading a review, because I'm interested in one particular person in one particular photograph. I found it enlightening and amusing. The Bright Young People that Taylor writes about were few; no doubt a lot of hangers on described themselves as Bright Young People during and after the event, but this book is about the epicentre, the small group of partygoers who started the trend then either took a back seat, left the country or were destroyed by it. The book concentrates on the essence of the movement, if that's what it was, the people at the heart of it, actual events and the people the newspapers ... Read More:
