I started reading this just after a trip to Venice. I found the first chapter or so a struggle, my feeling is the translation from the Italian is a little odd and a number of times I had to re read sentences to work out what was being said.
However, I persisted and once i got used to the style I found the book evoked so many memories of the feel of Venice. It is not about the tourist sights, it tells you about the heart and soul of the city and as such I would recommend it to anyone who wants to dig below the gondolas and the glassware and get a little closer to what Venice is really about.

This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!

I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is ... Read More:

Having waited keenly for the next 'Guido Brunetti' to appear, I read the dust cover summary and made a start soon after publication. 90 pages in, I was wondering if the publishers had made some sort of printing error - the dead girl had not yet been found in the Canal and the religious fraudster seemed to be going nowhere. It is only on page 100 that the real story begins and the original story is only mentioned again, as an apparent afterthought, towards the conclusion.
Ms Leon could have published the drowned girl tale as one of a series of a short stories(now there's an idea Donna!) and the previous reviewer's theory of a false start seems to be well founded. I wonder if Brunetti's career is coming to a close - maybe it's time for him ... Read More:

If you only take one guidebook to Venice, make sure it's this one. We took the 1st Edition along on our first trip to Venice last year and it changed a good holiday into an amazing experience.
There is a mouth-watering introductory section with guidance on what specialities to look out, very useful for a first timer. The main section reviews recommended bars, cafes and restaurants, usefully divided into geographical areas so you can easily plan an itinerary to fit in with sight-seeing. The enthusiasm of the authors for good food and for the city of Venice shines through on every page.
The reviews of bars and restaurants are completely honest and reliable, not only for the quality of food but also for the ambience and helpfulness of the staff. We didn't ... Read More:

The book's characteristics are the elegant, rich in historical and cultural content, insightful but witty and light in touch text and the beautiful photographs of landscape, seascape, buildings, monuments, ruins and works of art which are inextricably interwoven and mutually reinforcing;the impact on the reader is not merely additive but truly synergistic.

We travel with the author from the city of his birth, Venice aboard the Black Swan, a renovated 1899 yawl along trading routes of the Venetian Empire visiting the coastline and islands of the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas with Istanbul (formerly Constantinople)the final destination. Some of these lands were former colonies of 'La Serenissima' and we witness its legacy in the form of medieval fortifications ... Read More:
