In Italy, I have often cast a pitying eye on the uninspired faces of people in large tour groups. You have, no doubt, seen them yourself, as they mindlessly follow a leader who is holding some ridiculous object aloft on a stick and frequently supplying dubious anecdotal information selected to entertain rather than enlighten. Anyone in such a group with a zeal to know more about the scenic, historical, architectural, and artistic miracle that the world calls Italy would do well to obtain a copy of one of Morton’s books on Italy. But bring along a copy of a traditional guide as well, since Morton’s books will not direct you to the best hotels, restaurants, and places to shop; rather, they tend to be journals of travel experiences ... Just the most uninspiring guide book I have ever seen. The description is just inaccurate. It is a small little book - there is no detail at all just short descriptions. The photography is really poor - the print is cheap so the images are washed out. When I bought it I didn't pick up that it was a Thomas Cook book or I wouldn't have got it, it is one of those freebie books thrown in with package holidays. I just feel cross inside. Luckily there is loads of stuff online about Puglia. It says there are maps inside - as if - there are tiny maps with the main roads and a few towns marked. You are seriously better off looking online or getting a hold of the Dorling Kindersly Italy book and using their very short chapter on Puglia - which is still miles ... Read More:

I have just finished reading this book for the 3rd time, and am sure I will be reading it again soon. Adamoli is a great writer and you really feel as though you are in the beautiful seaside village with her. You are there when she discovers it, and you are there years later when the tourist trade is taking over.
She also has a little reciepe at the start of each chapter which is a nice idea! If you love reading books about Italy but are sick of the 'Under the Tuscan Sun' type books then this is for you!

It is marvellous that this, and other Morton books, are being republished. I first read 'A Traveller in Rome' as a teenager, not long after it was first published, and fell in love with the city at second-hand. A few years ago I spent three weeks in Rome, and found Morton's book ideal as a friendly, wise and incredibly knowledgeable book. It's not the kind of guidebook you carry around with you, from the Forum to St Peter's (it's a bit too substantial for that!) but it's ideal for research in advance, or checking more detail afterwards. But more, than that, it's an extraordinarily evocative and memorable read. I've been slowly collecting all Morton's books in second-hand copies, as even the earliest, though quaint, are worth reading, but it's ... Read More:

Carlo Levi was an anti-fascist in Mussolini's Italy(as well as a doctor)who was sentenced to a period of internal exile in the depths of rural southern Italy.
His portrait of the peasant world, with it's mixture of paganism, hunger and malaria is fantastic. He obviously empathises with the peasantry, but is never superior to them. Also, there is little or no self-pity("woe is me,a political exile").
This world vanished in the 1950's due to a combination of land reform, industrialisation and migration.Read Levi's account and wonder at a world that still existed in western Europe as recently as the late 1940s.
