This is one of the best books on travel experience to the Holy Land for two reasons, 1) You feel as if you are there 2) This book gives a picture of what the Holy Land was like in 1934 when Mr. Morton wrote it. This book was so good I ordered a copy before I had finished the copy that I had discovered by accident at the local library. This is a must read book. I will be ordering more copies to loan out and give as gifts.

H.V.Morton was one of the great travel writers and if you read Bill Bryson,Paul Theroux etc they all at some stage acknowledge that Morton blazed a trail for them to follow. "In Search of London" is one of his best and what is particularly fascinating is the period Morton writes about - 5/6 years after World War 2. It's a London hugely damaged by the Blitz and struggling to recover and for those with better knowledge of London than me it must be particularly interesting to compare his descriptions of particular bomb damaged locations with the same scene today. Morton has the magical ability to blend current day scenes with history and to bring by-gone times vividly to life - in his description of the Tower Of London he mentions Henry's six ... Read More:

In Italy, I have often cast a pitying eye on the uninspired faces of people in large tour groups. You have, no doubt, seen them yourself, as they mindlessly follow a leader who is holding some ridiculous object aloft on a stick and frequently supplying dubious anecdotal information selected to entertain rather than enlighten. Anyone in such a group with a zeal to know more about the scenic, historical, architectural, and artistic miracle that the world calls Italy would do well to obtain a copy of one of Morton’s books on Italy. But bring along a copy of a traditional guide as well, since Morton’s books will not direct you to the best hotels, restaurants, and places to shop; rather, they tend to be journals of travel experiences ... This is, simply, a wonderful book that is an utter joy to read. It must be a mark of the quality of writing that, reading over 80 years later, you still feel as if the ink hasn't yet dried, so fresh and immediate is the style.

In an engagingly witty journey through (mostly rural) England in the late 1920s, Mr Morton's writing conjures up all the sights and sounds that he encounters, from haunted gothic ruins to sunny vicarage gardens.

Throughout the writing, Mr Morton's affection and awe for the land, its people and its history come through. And it's refreshing to read a book devoid of the sort of cynicism and pessimism that marks much modern writing.

Jonathan Raban's book Soft City is a survival manual for living in the modern city. It takes you on a journey into memory and explains how your own 'soft city' is built from memories of the streets you have actually visited or streets you imagine; those you have loved and are gone. The book describes like no other has done before how we negotiate our own 'soft city'and how my city is different from yours and everyone else's. How we build associations with places, corners, alleyways and how this builds a familiarity without which we fail to survive our visit to the city. The book goes on to describe this mind construction as a kind of stage set that we create and in which we play out our part; some of us succeed at this game but many of us suffer from ... Read More:

Sara Wheeler went to Antarctica as part of the American National Science Foundation's Antarctic Artists' and Writers' Program, and found herself virtually the only creative type in a boys' club of Beards (scientists). She hopped all over the continent in a variety of planes and helicopters, learnt survival and other skills, and generally had a great time.

This is an engaging, informative book by a writer who is as capable of poking fun of herself as at everyone else. Even when she's writing seriously about the spiritual aspect of life out in the snow and ice, she doesn't come across as preachy or pompous. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, yet at the same time I felt she'd failed to communicate the beauty of Antarctica to me. Perhaps you have to ... Read More:

It is marvellous that this, and other Morton books, are being republished. I first read 'A Traveller in Rome' as a teenager, not long after it was first published, and fell in love with the city at second-hand. A few years ago I spent three weeks in Rome, and found Morton's book ideal as a friendly, wise and incredibly knowledgeable book. It's not the kind of guidebook you carry around with you, from the Forum to St Peter's (it's a bit too substantial for that!) but it's ideal for research in advance, or checking more detail afterwards. But more, than that, it's an extraordinarily evocative and memorable read. I've been slowly collecting all Morton's books in second-hand copies, as even the earliest, though quaint, are worth reading, but it's these late Italian ... Read More:

I've bought, read and enjoyed many of H.V.Morton's travel books so I was naturally interested in buying and reading this biography. I have to say I enjoyed this book and Michael Bartholomew has done a good job in bringing the man back to life so we can understand what sort of man H V Morton was. The problem is he was absolutely not a nice man at all. It would appear this biography was written with the full support of Morton's family who gave Michael Bartholomew full access to Morton's unpublished papers. Why did the family do this ? - it's a mystery to me.Morton turns out to have been anti-semitic,a rascist of the worst kind, defeatist, hypocritical, and a serial adulterer with an addiction to bought sex. Did I really want to know all this? I don't think so.The reality is ... Read More:
