What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

I always read each of P D James's books as it is published and quickly come to the same conclusion each time: although her books are well-plotted, she has a rare talent for populating them with characters that it is very difficult to relate to, whom we never really get inside the skin of, and who are universally dislikeable.

Dalgliesh, Miskin and Benton are far too cold and clinical - they either spend time focussed 100% on the case or else they ruminate on their personal lives in isolation. We never see them let their hair down, enjoy themselves or exchange the odd irreverent or humourous comment that is the difference between a robot and a human being.

Maybe the only poignant moment is when the potential suspect whose car was ... Read More:

I like the writing of Donna Lean. It's extremely evocative of Venice, and I feel comfortable in the company of her detective Commissario Brunetti. Her style of writing is fluent and enjoyable, her plots well thought out and intriguing. Normally! Perhaps she was having an "off period" while she was writing "Suffer the little Children", perhaps she was distracted by something, but it is not up to the usual standard. I'd be hard put to, to give a reason, but for me it just didn't seem to work. It somehow felt awkward and ill fitting, if indeed a book can be ill fitting. Read this novel by all means, but don't make it your first excursion into the world of Brunetti.

I love the Montalbano series but this is the weakest of the lot. The plot is paper thin and just silly. Livia comes over as a different character altogether, not the charming and feisty lover of previous books, just down right annoying. Overall there is less humour and above all a serious lack of attention to the plot. Not the most enjoyable visit to Vigata but still readable.

I suggest Amazon to warn costumers for books like this!

I am a great Sue Grafton fan but thought her last two novels were not up to standard, particularly R is for Ricochet. However her latest book is simply great, hugely gripping and a real page turner. I loved the new style with chapters going back and forth between Kinsey and the evil "care provider". It was very gratifying that Ms Grafton brought Kinsey's landlord very much into the story as he has been neglected of late. I have always loved the contribution made by Henry and his siblings. This is a real return to form and I have bought the hardback as a Christmas present for my niece and hope to convert her to Sue Grafton. I would have no hesitation in recommending this novel to anyone who has not yet discovered Ms. Grafton. It is a true demonstration of Sue Grafton's writing ... Read More:

To me, this book is the most unexpected page-turning thriller I've read in some time. I couldn't wait for the next surprise.

I was reminded of first reading the early Ian Fleming books about James Bond, feeling like I'd entered a fascinating new world that I never had never dreamed of. But Stieg Larsson's writing is much better than Fleming's and these characters are more nuanced in their unusual characteristics.

The book defies normal novel categories. There are such a major story lines about both the hero and heroine that the novel would be more than adequate just developing those ideas. The mystery of a young woman's disappearance is more than adequate to sustain the interest of anyone who likes books about amateur detectives. In the background, there are dark ... Read More:

I came late to the joys of the writing of Andrea Camilleri and his flawed and ageing Inspector Salvo Montalbano. Which is a tragedy for me since I dislike going back to earlier stories when I already know how the characters have evolved.

Fortunately, I came across 'The Scent of the Night' whilst on holiday so ordered this book ready for my return. I'm glad I did. This is the seventh in the series; I've no idea how many more can be created by the author but both books I've read are simply full of warmth in the writing, seriousness in the characterisation and, on top of all that, there is the added bonus of a good few snippets of Sicilian food recipes.

Camilleri, ably aided by his excellent translator, creates a picture of Sicily which you cannot help but enjoy. In a way, that there ... Read More:
