Why was the Victorian workhouse quite so draconian? and why did a so called "reform" act appear to do so little to alleviate the suffering of Britain's poor. This concise book explains the motives behind 19th century regimes of suffering and how, as the century progressed, the thinking behind these regimes was proven to be floored.

I am currently studying (and struggling with) Italian Unification at the moment so bought this book in the hope that it would shed some light on what exactly happened during unification, especially seeing as Heinemann is a pretty well known and reliable source. well...I'm not convinced, it has some really useful parts but the majority I found not to be that relevant to what I'm studying and the layout - black and white text, that's it - was a bit scary to plunge in to. If you're really desperate like me then I recommend you give it a go as you might take more from it than I have but bear in mind it's not hugely useful.

I have found this book helpful for both my AS and A2 options on Stalinist Russia. Has questions and answers from past A-Level papers, which I found tremendously useful. In addition, the book concentrates on the A-Level syllabus rather than adding unnecessary waffle - great to use throughout the course!

This book is an extremely interesting read, particularly for AS Level Students like myself. It provides the reader with an adequate amount of detail suitable for the course, without an excess of information. The key questions that are presented throughout the book are particularly useful to investigate, as they are realistic potential examination questions. The book is useful in that it doesn't just provide the facts, but it considers both sides of the argument and this enables a balanced essay to be successfully written.
I found the chapters on Bismarck's Germany the most useful and I was glad to see helpful summary diagrams and maps included. The end of each chapter offers possible essay questions which are extremely useful to any exam ... Read More:

I found this incredibly useful for my studies, particularly the third section on representation and democracy 1832-1931. It's very clearly written and breaks downs the key areas of historical intepretation and analysis which you need to get a grip of inorder to achieve a top grade. As a previous reviewer has noted it may well be a little thinner on the detail than some A level texts, but there is more than enough to fill any exam essay several times over. My only quibble is that at the end of each of it's three main sections there are questions in the style of either AQA or Edexcel exam boards. However the Edexcel versions aren't correct, either they are source based questions when they shouldn't be or vice versa. But no matter, the content here ... Read More:

This text book was recommended to me by my history teacher and it has been very useful as i have covered the 2nd yr of the Italian Unit. All the important aspects of Mussolini's dictatorship are covered well in this book, particularly the economy which i feel can be a difficult area to understand.

I would definately recommend it as a course aid and a good basis for revision, it's well worth the money.

This book gives a great overview of the russian revolution and is an easy and interesting read that serves as a great introductory basis for an A level student or even anyone whose vaguely intrigued by the subject. It is not as overwhelming as other books tend to be, and has a decent structured layout when explaining the different perspectives involved. I only gave it 4 stars because despite the positive factors of the book, it can only be used as gaining an overview and brief knowledge of the events in the russian and although this provides a little and not too complicated understanding,I was expecting more depth. On the whole it was a great book.

This book is fantastic, it gives a clear, cut and consise overview of the German History period from 1919 - 1945.
It supports AQA, OCR and Edexcel Exam boards AS/A Level and gives the necessary jump from GCSE to AS to A Level.

The Book Covers -
Weimar Germany 1919-29
The Rise of the Nazi Party
Nazi Germany 1933-1945
Weimar and Nazi Germany

This book is what text books aimed at there intended audience should be like, once again Hinemann have got it right again.

It even provides some further reading for GCSE students, but GCSE students should primarly stick to there exam board accredited exam books, only to use this for further reading.

Many writers later featured workhouses in their writings. These included George Orwell who in his book 'Down and Out in Paris and London' published in 1933 describes visits to a workhouse or 'spike'. Workhouses were only finally swept away under Clement Attlee's post war Labour government.
