I was fortunate enough to hear a series of fantastic and thought-provoking lectures by the author of this slim volume. Reading this is almost as good as listening to the lectures. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in brushing up their knowledge of the Cold War--it should be in every serious 20th-century History student's library.

Silly, jingoistic, pulp history shot through with half truths, unsupported and unsupportable claims and distortions. John Lewis Gaddis is a history professor at Yale University but how he can draw so many stupid conclusions from the Cold War is beyond me. Nobody in their right mind would say that Joe Stalin was a good guy, nor would they be likely to say his successors were freedom loving liberals either but the standard neo-con treatment these days is to score points with heavy handed jingoism rather than presenting history as it happened. I'm sorely tempted to call it propaganda.

The layout of the book is extremely poor and jumps from one thing to another without any real semblance of method. You will find yourself reading about ... Read More:

A good overview of the main events of this period: if you're just generally curious about the Cold War and what the main events and trends in it were, this is quite suitable. However, the sheer brevity of the format of this series of books (and 'Seminar Studies' is very good, believe me) works against a fully fleshed-out account of this topic. There are mentions of certain events but they lack a little background needed to explain them. I kept finding myself reading some remark and thinking 'But "why" did that happen?'. Still, a good read, and well-explained.

This book was like the bible when it came to my OCR A Level Modern History course. For A Level students, the course structure alters slightly from AS as more emphasis is placed on historiography, mainly the perspectives and premises of other historians, Orthodox, Revionist and Post-revisionist, all of which McCauley covers in detail. McCauley himself is referred to by many OCR exam papers for this course, thus to understand his style of writing and his perspectives regarding any of the themes covered by the Cold War syllabus is always a plus. Without dragging on, I'll try and summarise the best points:

+ Detailed description of the three principal theories (as mentioned above) with excellent and appropriate reference to many other historians, ... Read More:

This text book was recommended to me by my history teacher and it has been very useful as i have covered the 2nd yr of the Italian Unit. All the important aspects of Mussolini's dictatorship are covered well in this book, particularly the economy which i feel can be a difficult area to understand.

I would definately recommend it as a course aid and a good basis for revision, it's well worth the money.

The VSI series doesn't always work for me. If I invest time to read any non-fiction book, I expect it to better than a few internet articles.

This book is a summary of facts with a few interesting angles that cover the geo-politics and strategies mainly from the Western perspective.

But the problem with some of these VSI's is because they are so short, the authour doesn't have scope to include some real meaty stuff or delve into their own opinions.

It's just summary history, but a good Wikipedia article is the same!
At 167 pages, there's at least 4 hours reading for me. So if my objective is just to get information and an education of the cold war, are my better off going for this VSI or to Wikipedia or google video, ... Read More:
