Finally i read a book that tells the truth about the united states of hypocracy. Very interesting telling the story from the first Dutch, and english settlers to the slaughter of indians, slavery and the war of indepandance, the un-civil war and the stealing of half of mexico. And how america lies about winning the two great wars, they just joined the winning team and tried to take all the credit. A very good read for anyone interested in "Gods/Satans Country".

My 9 year old devoured this and the 2007 Annual last year within days of receiving them both (and he's a bit of a reticent reader). Even tho some of the stories are pretty grim, it's real history, and my son loved reading and reading and reading about everything. And when he could quote us back the facts (even if his objective was to make us cringe), we knew he'd actually been learning something along the way.

As great a character in the flesh as he comes across in his brilliant books, Terry Deary is a very down to earth person. I just wish history had been so excitingly written when I was at school! I might have learned something! In this book even the 'French Revolution' is really humorous but...above all...it is interesting...... This book is a little more expensive than the norm, as it is a 'Special', but well worth every extra penny. Guaranteed not to be out down and just think of all those extra facts that have been picked up, with no effort, in this great read! History with the nasty bits left in! History has never been so horrible! I'd recommend this series of books for any primary age group.

I love the Horrible Histories series and I'm not at all a stickler for perfect historical accuracy in them. These books are meant to make children interested in history and learn to enjoy reading. That said, this particular "Horrible History" loses one star for being obviously biased against the Republic of Ireland, and another because this bias can be so damaging to kids. The tensions in Northern Ireland are not at an end, and presenting a view of the area that clearly comes out on one side of the conflict is truly irresponsible. Adults will be able to recognize this bias and take it with a grain of salt, but if you are planning to give this book to a kid or use it in a classroom, make sure you let them know that this is ... The front cover features Henry VIII commenting to a 'head' in a basket- 'That'll Teach you to make Lumpy Custard'! The typical humour of Terry Deary that makes one look forward to every title and the books are SO difficult to put down! Great for new history readers and a handy reference/revision for 'older' readers, this book covers a multitude of grotty kings and gruesome queens, from 'William the Conqueror' to 'Lizzie the Last'! The last paragraph of the book:- 'The Royals are as useless as they ever were.....but the Brits seem to like them that way.' Hmmm - I wonder if we'll ever see 'Sir' Terry Deary on a 'Horrible History' cover?

My son loves all these books. They have helped to create a very real interest in history for him. I think he now has the whole series of them. They present history in a manner that makes it both interesting and easy for children to access. There is not one in the series that fails to do this. The only problem with them is that they provide some stuff outside the curricilum and that can embarass the teachers faced with a child knowing more than they are expected to. I think a lot of teachers are now reading them to keep up with the kids.

A brilliant book from a brilliant man, yet again. This time a 'Special'about Bloody Scotland! When I met Terry, at a book signing event, he was just as funny in the flesh! He confided to me, that THEY (The Scots, presumably!) tried to sue over this particular title! To this day I still don't know whether he was pulling my leg or not! The History of Scotland as you want to read it! We'd say this is excellent reading for both children and adults, Scottish or otherwise!
