Having read such glowing reviews of this book i began to read it with high expectations - it may well be a good descriptive text, but it has no impact at all on all of the billions of people on the planet who can't just conveniently run away to an island or go off for a year to find themselves - it was a self-satisfying, shallow read - i am sorry I wasted hard-earned money on it.

This is a joy to listen to. Eckhart certainly knows the essence of all the key spiritual messages that have been passed down over the centuries and puts them in his own non-dogmatic, modern, clear way. I have studied spiritual, religious and mystical writings for over twenty years - and this sums them all up.

This book was given to me as a present - I would not have dreamt of buying it myself!

What can I say but that the thought process (seasoned with narcissism and treacled with worship of the self) which underpins this little book goes against all that I hold dear.

Further, it is downright bizarre and borders on the offensive at times. I will quote from it liberally below to support what I have said. Pseudo-religion for the bourgeoise, complacent and self satisfied.

"We are each responsible for all our experiences" (page xiii)

This is plainly wrong. We possess a human nature which is subject to the vagaries of the external world - famine, disease, earthquakes. These are simply ... Read More:

Practicing the Power of Now is a handy companion to Eckhart's wildly popular The Power of Now. Essentially, Practicing the Power of Now contains the same information as in the first book. However, I have to say that I prefer this format. The first book was written in a question answer format. These questions came from the author's students. He also included amalgamated questions that covered a variety of common queries. These question and answer sessions gradually took the reader from common perception through to an understanding of the illusions that we generally accept as real and the importance of the present moment.

Practicing the Power of Now is written in formalized chapters summarizing much of the material written that first book ... Read More:

If you are in midlife and not wholly happy with your life, read this book. This book is meant to empower.

Marianne Williamson asks us: "How would we live were we not afraid of death? How would we live if we felt full permission from ourselves and others to give to life everything we've got?"

With those thoughts in mind, Williamson guides the reader to go after the life they want; to be proactive. Only when "we go for it" do we flourish.
Midlife is what you create. We are not too old to change, if anything, with age comes knowledge, Williamson counsels.

Williamson believes midlife is another stage of life and should be celebrated as such--not unlike the transition from childhood into teenager. She claims the ... Read More:

This suffers from the same problems as the DVD.

It's derivative. There is absolutely nothing that hasn't been said over and over again.

It's simplistic. Life can be simple, but that doesn't mean you should treat your audience as if they are too.

It's repetitive. Get a variety of different figures in your niche to all say the same things using slightly different words.

It's nasty. Follow the philosophy through to it's logical conclusion and you are left with the concept that those who suffer have brought it upon themselves. There may be a grain of truth for some of the many unfortunates out there, but try telling a starving family in a poverty- and drought-stricken wilderness that really they ought to just ... All Eckhart Tolle DVD's CD's and books are fantastic - this DVD set is extra special as it is over 4 hours long and comes with a 64 page book.

With his wonderful blend of humour and simple truths, Eckhart's life transforming words deepen our awareness and anchor us firmly in "The now" - the only place we can ever be.

Stillness, presence, silence, the egoic state, the flowering of human consciousness, combating excessive thinking, forms and the formless, are all covered and much more.

Using brilliantly clear explanations Eckhart leads us from suffering into peace.

I personally loved this book. It is not a particularly (if at all) 'intellectual' book - it is a romance and thriller novel that spans so many pages it manages to find itself wound up as a tome of a book.

Nevertheless, if you are going on a trip or find yourself needing something to read, give this a try. It is not as difficult as it may appear, and, quite fun!

This book has provided the answers I have sought to all of the problems I have had over many years. It has got to be the best book on modern spirituality ever written. It's very deep and at times requires careful study, but it all makes so much sense you will feel yourself lifted with each page.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. What it says seems to make sense on an intuitive level. I seem to be alone in not being entirely convinced by his arguements. I think particularly where he tries to relate things to evolutionary theory. An evolutionary process, rather like the biological one, using mechanisms similar to natural selection, certainly occurs. But these two processes are not identical, and I think the two get mixed up in here. However, maybe it's me that's mixed up.
The kind of book I would read more than once, if there were not so many other books out there waiting to be read.
