I love this book. It's an unusual mixture, a hard book to categorise, but that's its stength. For many who come to Tuscany it's the perfect mixture as the great food and beautiful scenery combined are such a part of the pleasure. Beth Elon suggests driving routes with places to see along the way, then explains the food specialities of each area,lists special places to eat, then gives a few sample recipes from each restaurant. One of the real strengths is the local specialities information, as it really highlights some of traditions and how food can be unique to a particular small location not just 'Tuscany' as a larger region. I don't usually like guidebooks. They can be dry, stuffy and written by people who seem to glide through a country without experiencing it. This is completely different. We had browsed in a shop but got a better price here, so bought online. Shona Main and Nick Bruno have an obvious passion for the area and are more like good friends passing on recommendations, rather than distant writers. That's not to say the writing isn't good. Quite the contrary, this is also the most entertaining guide book I've come across. It was good to use on the road, and even though we don't have kids, we decided that this book fulfilled everything we needed from the trip. ..instead of having to pay through the nose for a copy in a Sienese bookshop. As ever, LP guides have the feeling of being written by someone who's actually been there, and the advice on San Gimignano (get there early or go in Winter) would have been worth it alone. This is an excellent guide, especially if - like us - you were roaming over both regions during your holiday. Highly recommended

I took this book along with others to Tuscany - my first visit. We were staying in the middle of Chiantishire and found the book invaluable and for our limited time there, accurate. There are detailed descriptions of Florence and Siena but also some helpful guidance on the Tuscany villages. Useful because the villages take time to get to and we needed to prioritise. Very accurate about the restaurants and trattorias we used.
