Overall I enjoyed reading this book, an easy read, nicely written. However some parts was over detailed, slow and predictable.

The story itself is not remarkable, although it is intriguing. A young man's childhood memories as he tries to piece together the story of his parents' past. Memories of his American childhood, interspersed with tales of wartime horrors and escapades in Czechoslovakia, a real love affair that's doomed from the beginning, plus the memories of those living in exile as a result of the war. What does make this novel remarkable is the way in which it's written - the reading of it can be likened to partaking of a feast! Mark Slouka's use of the English language is quite wonderful - like listening to a magnificent piece of music being beautifully played. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

Notes From An Exhibition synopsis from Amazon:

Renowned Canadian artist Rachel Kelly -- now of Penzance -- has buried her past and married a gentle and loving Cornish man. Her life has been a sacrifice to both her extraordinary art and her debilitating manic depression. When troubled artist Rachel Kelly dies painting obsessively in her attic studio in Penzance, her saintly husband and adult children have more than the usual mess to clear up. She leaves behind an extraordinary and acclaimed body of work -- but she also leaves a legacy of secrets and emotional damage it will take months to unravel. A wondrous, monstrous creature, she exerts a power that outlives her. To her children she is both curse and blessing, though they all in one way ... Read More:

I read this book in 1.5 days much to my wife's irritation since I was supposed to be helping look after the children while on holiday! Other reviewers have referred to the clautrophobia of the 1950s which I would entirely concur with, there is a fawning sense of hierarchy and keeping up appearances regardless of underlying realities.
A great novel dealing with hypocrisy, failed communication between father and son, failure of articulation of great distress and possible resolution.
I strongly recommend reading it.

This book has stayed with me and I personally found that the second half worked after the first part (for those who haven't read the book, there is change of location and mood). However, it left me with a sense of disappointment. The book rushes along and I was left feeling that more attention and character development for fewer characters would have made for a more rounder novel. However, it is definitely worth reading and indeed was haunting at times.

I don't even know where to start in reviewing this book. I can't quite remember when a book drew me in and kept my attention for the duration of the novel like this one did. It was a long book but it was so engrossing I read it within a couple of days, I literally couldn't put it down. It was absolutely magical. Well done Kate Morton!

The story begins in 1913 with a very little girl who lands in Australia apparently without any history, even to the extent of not remembering her own name, only that a lady called 'the Authoress' is supposed to be looking after her and she has disappeared. She is taken in by the harbour master and his family and when no one comes forward to claim her they decide to keep her and call her Nell. Nell settles into the family ... Read More:

...but I thought it was quite enjoyable. Nothing earth-shattering but it did keep my interest all the way through.

The Welsh slant to a WWII story was something that I hadn't really considered before but I'm afraid I really didn't see the point of the Hesse storyline, I didn't feel that it added very much to the plot.

I borrowed this book from my Mum who said that she didn't enjoy it at all, but then we do tend to have completely opposing taste in books!

Overall recommendation - good beach / tube read!

I was looking forward to this book but was disappointed. I found it slow and a little dreary. Very little happens. Not even a great love story. So much of the book was taken up on the boat to India, I kept wondering if they were ever going to get there. After reading so many other gripping books recently, I felt hard done by. I perservered and although it had a pleasant ending, although somewhat predictable, I kept thinking "is that it?" Very easy to read but not at all exciting.

The opening of the book was mildly engrossing and although I never got truly sucked into it, I finished it nonetheless.
What annoyed me about it was the writing style, I found it terribly clunky in parts and particularly in the first section, there were attempts at descriptive writing which just didn't work, resulting in some unnecessarily wieldy and at times not quite comprehensible sentences. The story is OK, I hoped for some more depth, it was all abit obvious and I just found the main character at times just did not seem credible. I would have loved more development of the other characters, in particular the daughter whom to me had the more interesting persona. I've read worse, but it's not great either.
