The book's characteristics are the elegant, rich in historical and cultural content, insightful but witty and light in touch text and the beautiful photographs of landscape, seascape, buildings, monuments, ruins and works of art which are inextricably interwoven and mutually reinforcing;the impact on the reader is not merely additive but truly synergistic.

We travel with the author from the city of his birth, Venice aboard the Black Swan, a renovated 1899 yawl along trading routes of the Venetian Empire visiting the coastline and islands of the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas with Istanbul (formerly Constantinople)the final destination. Some of these lands were former colonies of 'La Serenissima' and we witness its legacy in the form of medieval ... Read More:

This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!

Thanks to the BBC and Amazon for this wonderful DVD release. DVD's from Amazon UK "always" seem to reach us here in Java Indonesia on the other side of the world.
We have been waiting over a month for four DVD's from the US Amazon (Amazon.com)however Amazon UK discs arrive within days not weeks thanks to the UK Royal Post no doubt.I'm told that Amazon in the US sends DVD's to Indonesia via DPGM (most likely Deutsche Post)
We've viewed Count Francesco's beautiful tour through his beloved Italy and will soon join Francesco on the Mediterranean Voyage. By the way Francesco I'm originally an Australian now retired in Indonesia....I loved your intros to some sentences "You British......"
If the series had have been around 10 years ago, maybe I would ... Read More:

It is the second publication from FDM. The first one "Venice", I have the DVD and the book. I must say that this DVD/Book was also very informative and attractive. I understood that I did not know nothing about Venetian culture, art and history, although I had been there twice. For my next visit I have already watched the DVDs several time and took notes and still planning my next visit. With all these emotions when I saw the new publication "Francesco' s Med. Voyage" I did not hesitate to buy both the book and DVD. I must say it has the same flavor as "Venice", FDM on the route to Istanbul gives preliminary clues about he history of every place the "Black Swan" stops by. I must repreat that I really liked it but there are 2 critisism that I want to raise. First maybe ... Read More:

I can only say that this is an excellent travel series, as good as Francesco's Italy or any other similar series. Thank you Brian Sewell for showing me around Turin and some sites I didn't visit when I was in Turin. You didn't do the most predictable sight-seeing. No mention of the egyptology museum but instead San Lorenzo's church. Never heard of it before. You've helped me understand Turin's history and everything about the grand tourists from our country to theirs, 300 years ago, and it's amazing how things have developed. From people scrabbling up snowy mountains if they couldn't handle being carried on a stretcher thing by peasants, to the cable car. From playing footsie and flirting to the point of "rolling around on the floor together" at the opera, to obvious and ... Read More:

The television series was brilliant as is the book. Excellent illustrations and interesting commentary. The book provides an insight into Paris from an insiders point of view! As I am moving to Paris later this year I've found the suggestions for Museums and the information on culture truly fascinating!!

A must if you are interested in all things Paris.
