Thankfully i managed to record all four episodes of Francescos very entertaining Top to Toe series on Italy onto disc.

His ladish exploits in that gorgeous Alfa Spider made the series a more lite hearted affair to his magnificent Venice, and his influnce in being one of the oldest Venitian families opened doors into fabulous palaces and villas that are barred to all members of the public.
Naturally he could not spend too long in the north of the country but witnessing Lucca, Puccinis birthplace and Bolognia the oldest university in the world made what he did choose trully excelleny.Veronia was where Shakespeare based Romeo and Juiliet but Shakey never visited the place.

The highlite of the series for me was when he travelled ... Read More:

The book's characteristics are the elegant, rich in historical and cultural content, insightful but witty and light in touch text and the beautiful photographs of landscape, seascape, buildings, monuments, ruins and works of art which are inextricably interwoven and mutually reinforcing;the impact on the reader is not merely additive but truly synergistic.

We travel with the author from the city of his birth, Venice aboard the Black Swan, a renovated 1899 yawl along trading routes of the Venetian Empire visiting the coastline and islands of the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas with Istanbul (formerly Constantinople)the final destination. Some of these lands were former colonies of 'La Serenissima' and we witness its legacy in the form of medieval ... Read More:

This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!

I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is a cheek-by-jowl, back ... Read More:

It is the second publication from FDM. The first one "Venice", I have the DVD and the book. I must say that this DVD/Book was also very informative and attractive. I understood that I did not know nothing about Venetian culture, art and history, although I had been there twice. For my next visit I have already watched the DVDs several time and took notes and still planning my next visit. With all these emotions when I saw the new publication "Francesco' s Med. Voyage" I did not hesitate to buy both the book and DVD. I must say it has the same flavor as "Venice", FDM on the route to Istanbul gives preliminary clues about he history of every place the "Black Swan" stops by. I must repreat that I really liked it but there are 2 critisism that I want to raise. First maybe because ... Read More:

Dont go to venice without this book , it has everything you need . We brought this along with the Lonely Planet Map and they were both excellent. Venice can be really busy but this book has many suggestions of where to spend your time. A perfect guide to a beautiful city.

very helpful if you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Venice. Spot on with it's information and giving an excellent overview of the City. Although Venice is an easy City to get around in and find your way, you might loose yourself in the many little streets. And then you want a reliable guide that gets you back on track. Gives great information about the usual tourist sites, but also invites you to make you own discoveries and lets you chose your tailor-made holiday. The only thing I would add is a guide to the best "Gelaterias" of the City! ;-) Wouldn't want to go on a holiday without my DK!

This review refers to the 2003 Penguin edition, which consists of what had been two separate books issued in 1977 and 1981 respectively, namely "Venice: The Rise to Empire" and "Venice: The Greatness and Fall". Both books had been combined into one volume by Penguin in 1983. (For those wanting details of the city's history after 1797, John Julius Norwich has produced a quasi-successor volume, "Paradise of Cities: Venice and Its Nineteenth Century Visitors", but, as its title indicates, this is as much concerned with prominent outsiders than with the city itself.)

Since the one-volume history was published in 1983, there has been no revision of the text; neither has there been an update of the bibliography nor the writing of a new introduction. That said, the introduction ... Read More:
