After Burning Blue I bought this sight unseen in hardback and after this book I'll buy any war fiction he produces.

Loved it. Joss was a wonderfully drawn character as were most of the secondary characters. Wasn't so sure about Stella, who seemed to fall in and out of love far too easily. But it didn't really spoil the story, apart from giving me a slight pause towards the end. Still a five star read and I'm very much looking forward to JH's next book.

The trilogy reaches its peak with panache. Charlie has lived in a world where truth is stranger than fiction, so where it is fiction it is extremely difficult to portray with balance and conviction and David Fiddimore has improved with each book. Does it have to remain a trilogy? There is plenty of material out there for Charlie to be involved with and plenty of decades in which it could happen. I hope to meet him again, Mr. Fiddimore, if you should ever happen across this. I'll say it again. EXCELLENT!!!

I gave up early on. I love light reads which I can pick up and put down again around my busy life. This was far too detailed as if the author was writing a factual piece. The depth of research distracted me from the main story line which I was keen to follow. As a holiday read then maybe as I could dedicate solid hours and days to ploughing through the pages, as a light read then no.

I really enjoyed this book. It seemed, in some ways less focussed than it's prequel, Tuesday's War, but it talked about the chaos, destruction and horror of Europe in early 1945 without being overwhelming and depressing. Some of the humour in it was a bit trite and there were some future-echoes, which always annoy me in historical novels, like lots of catchprases of the later 20th century being used, then noted in a little book by one of the characters.

I suppose that Penguin, who publish the novels of the late Ian Fleming these days, had to do something to mark the centenary of his birth. And indeed they have - they've commissioned a modern-day author to write a brand new James Bond adventure. They have chosen Sebastian Faulks - and rather than attempt to do what the movies have already done and relocate Fleming's spy to the modern day, Faulks has taken this achetypal 1950s fictional secret agent and only moved him on a few years - to the mid-60s, where we find him on leave while recovering from his last Fleming adventure, and feeling over the hill and generally past it. Faulks does a reasonably good job of writing in the style of Ian Fleming -with all of the good and bad things that that implies. ... Read More:

I cannot but feel let down after reading this book. After the first Jack Steel novel, yes there were obvious reasons why it should be compared to the Sharpe adventures, but has a good yarn I felt it had good merit, and stood up very well on its own. This second novel lacked pace ( except towards the end )and certainly was nowhere has good a read has the first. Lets hope Mr Gale third one regains the momentum. Mike D.

I have now read all three of the Charlie Bassett chronicles.I am now starting to read them for the second time.One or two phrases used brought back my service life vividly.Marvellous reading and recommended.
