A complicated story of a girl, who decides to die. It is far from corny, and is in reality much more insightful. I personally picked it up and dropped it about 10 times before finally managing to start it. My grandmother's recent passing made me think it would not be a pleasant read. Turns out it was, even in that context.
I loved it because it made me pause, and think, and realise, that I should not take tomorrow for granted. And neither should you. It's one of those books that you read once and they change you. Their lessons can never be forgotten.
Highly recommended reading.

The story is simple, a girl gets a call from a child hood friend who is now in the seminary, to attend his lecture. She meets him and the bonding gets strengthened, then she comes to know that he has the ability to create miracles and cure people. But he is torn between his love for her and his responsibility towards fellow humans. By the time she decides to support him in his role, he gives up his ability to be with her. So she runs away from him and writes the story sitting in front of the river Piedra. Belief has it that anything thrown into the river Piedra turns into stone and she thinks she can cast away her sorrow.

It would have been better if the story ended there. However he comes back in search of her and promises to be with her ... Read More:

Without a doubt this book is a truly great piece of work. Not the simplistic and beautiful message we can easily absorb and receive in the Alchemist... nonetheless a powerful read. It does get a bit heavy and circuitous in the middle chapters for sure but I think having read many Paulo Coelho books he uses the weightiness of his story to show us sometimes how life can be.... we get weighed down with life before we find our path once again.
Read this book if you have ever found yourself lost or unhappy with what you have become in your life... its a soulful search for the man he had lost ... the one his wife could no longer live with. Each person has their own Zahir - its finding the courage and the way to follow your heart's desire that eventually takes ... Read More:

This is Coelho's first book, written before he became famous and before the Alchemist. I was impressed by the Alchemist, 11 Minutes and the Zahir but I was bemused and trully horrified by this supposedly true story. I think it shows how traditional religion can distort people's perception of reality and led me to doubt Coelho's intelligence and sanity. It made me concerned that others might be persuaded to explore Christian mystic sects and take superstition seriously or even attempt to copy some of the extreme techniques in the book which seemed to describe Coelho engaging with demonic voices in his head... Does he suffer from schizophrenia? I think it shows how organised religion can be damaging and how people can be taken in by cults. Dangerous rubbish.

Very inspirational collection of short, quite simple at first sight, passages. Each page of the book is a new passage - a message of guidance, wisdom and encouragement. Each passage sets out to define a characteristic of 'the warrior of light', a concept I will not even attempt to explain here. Read the book, let your inner light shine and, in essence, live a better life.

I found Paulo Coelho's The Valkyries a bit of an enigma. I suspect the author at least partly intended it to be so. In a nutshell, the author seeks to discover new aspects of his psyche, to develop new angles on his existing skills. After a consultation with his mentor, he and his wife set off for a jaunt in the Mojave Desert to find what it is that they seek. Our author is in engaged in a quest, a search for his personal Angel. The reader, I am sure, will be convinced from the start that she accompanied him throughout.

They wander off in full sun one day, take their clothes off (for some reason) and have to be rescued by Gene, who has seen it all before. He reassures the travellers that they will find their valkyries. And they do. They turn out to be a band of leather ... Read More:

There are plenty of enjoyable tales and memoirs in this book, but if you've read most of the writer's other books you'll have a sense of having heard it all before. Easy enough to read, but because it's just more of the same it seems rather trite to me.

Paulo Coelho writes beautifully, and it's very easy to get swept up in his prose, but I felt that this time there was something rushed in his storytelling.

More overtly religious and less poetic than his other books I've read (The Alchemist, Veronica Decides to Die, Eleven Minutes), and although the usual faith-hope-justice theme was present here too, the story here was less meandering, the twists and turns here were more abrupt, and his hero's efforts seemed to me to be to a large extent futile.

Having said that, I read this book in almost a single sitting and definitely enjoyed reading it, but it didn't make me feel inspired or elated like some of his previous works.
(I'd rate it three-and-a-half stars if I could.)

While I loved the Alchemist and Veronika Decides to Die, I found this book a little dissapointing. It didn't move me as deeply or profoundly as the former two. While a nice story, it lacks what the others have

Every time there is a new book from Paolo I don't want to buy it because I don't believe that he can write another amazing book. But I am always wrong :)
