I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Languedoc and I've been reading several guides to the region. This is not a terrible guide, but it's the one I liked the least.

This book would be good if you already know exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, there is plenty of specific information on things like opening hours and places to stay. It's very well researched. But if you're earlier in the planning stages than that, it doesn't really do it. The chapters leap about from place to place and it gets confusing trying to work out where they are in relation to one another. Moreover, nowhere sounds particularly enticing! (Apart from Montpellier: clearly a favorite of the author). Several towns that are ... Read More:

I'm planning to walk over the Pyrenees from Catalonia to the Midi this summer, and was looking for a good resource to give me a well-informed idea of possible starting points, finishes, distances and the natural obstacles involved.

Although the Rough Guide was slagged off somewhat by previous reviewers for being a) too big to be properly useful as a hiking guide, and b) too useful specifically for hikers (there's no pleasing some people!), I'm glad to say that it's perfect for me - I'm not going to take it on the trip, but I'll be siphoning every little bit of information from it while planning.

And there's a lot of information. For instance, all the telephone numbers for refuges are there ... Read More:

This is easily the most feeble of all the many Rough Guides I have used while abroad. If the author did all the research and writing on his own, than that's a mistake which shows. He's clearly uninterested in art (viz. cursory descriptions of Musee Fabre in Montpellier and Musee Goya at Castres), so someone who is interested should have been employed to help him out.

There are glaring omissions - the rural area around the Herault Valley is fascinating and offers lots of walking possibilities, and there should have been clear advice on where the best beaches are on the Languedoc Coast in the Montpellier-Narbonne-Beziers sector; Catlos more or less dismisses this whole littoral, which is wrong, as there are a few nice, uncrowded places ... While I still say don't drive in France without it, the little symbol for Michelin-listed Camping Sites has been removed. This is a big disappointment for the camping fraternity.

I suppose SatNav is taking over (some campsite websites give their Long & Lat now), but you still a need a decent map to get the overal picture and work out alternatives when the SatNav fails, tries to send you the wrong way up a one way street or is just plain out of date.

This is your decent map of roads in France!

Only that it's good, has clear mapping and lots of detailed information. It has a ring binding, which I like as this enables you to keep the book open at the desired page without damaging it. It also has a complete index of towns and villages at the back, and each of the city centre maps has its own street index - very useful. Not to mention the small scale route planning map and the map of administrative departments. What more could you need? And it's just about small enough to fit in your glove compartment. So if it seems a little heavy, unwieldy and difficult to navigate at times, well, France is a lot bigger than England.
