A book of out of the way, out of the ordinary camping is a terrific idea, which is why I bought the book. Many of the sites featured look amazing, and they have all been personally 'road-tested' by the CC crew. So far so very good. However there is a (quite a big in my view) downside in that although there is on the surface a large choice of sites, in reality this amounts to an average of less than four sites in each of the 23 counties/regions represented. So if you want to use this to plan a trip, rather than take it with you, then its really good and will get you to some really interesting off-the-beaten-track places (and I do intend to try some of them out), but much less use as something you carry around in your panniers or ... The reason I bought this was that I thought it would include more French sites than the Europe edition. I was wrong! CONS Be aware that only a very small fraction of French sites are actually listed in this handbook. For example, if you choose a region you may find that there are only half a dozen or so sites to choose from for that region. Most of the sites seem to be about 10 miles apart with lots of sites in-between missed out. PROS Of the sites that are reviewed, the descriptions are very good, with lots of information about the site and the local area. Also the postcode is listed which is useful ... Read More:

You will love this book when it arrives. It is great to look at and involving to read, but the problems arise when you actually come to use it as a camping guide. The accounts are too subjective and seem to be based on a very particular and personal takes on the sites. Those at Arisaig for example are talked up as the amongst the finest in Scotland. When we were there they were crowded out with motorhomes running generators and the sunsets were somewhat spoiled by the portable television aerials. There was no room left for tents. There were other sites in the area which were not mentioned, but which did have room for tents and which seemed to be at least as good as though in the guide.
