 : The Icarus Agenda
If you thought that Ludlum would never better The Bourne Identity then you may be surprised. The Icarus Agenda has not only a plot that keeps getting more and more twisted as the story evolves but also it portarys a man that is charismatic enough to make the reader feel truly involved.

The story is, like with all Ludlum's books, a complicated mass of political and moral deceptions. But written masterly so that you're often be surprised at the new twist, yet never lost and confused by it. As always as unbelievable as the plot may seem it's also seems so feasible, as all Ludlum's book.

If, Like some have said, you believe the book has too many twist for you to follow, then perhaps you'd be better ... Read More:

I have to say that I am dumbfounded that this book managed to get published as an adult book! If the characters had been from a fantasy world or even a Sci-Fi angle it may have worked from a story point of view, although this wouldn't have excused the appalling writing.

Basically a group of elite soldiers from the 'smaller' countries in the world run around the world finding the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World with the aid of an archaeologist come mad professor/inventor - who seems able to invent an appropriate gadget for each required situation, including a perfectly working bionic arm for the main hero who loses his by sticking it, heroically, into molten lava - and a small mystic girl who can decipher dead languages. They are ... Read More:

The book started well with a crisp plot but then descended into bathos or a Keystone Cops finale where the heroes suddenly had kevlar suits, magnetic grips and propane explosives. In fact the last 60 pages were awful. Gayle to me has a sub plot which would be worth anyone looking for in her other novels. Namely women are good and most men are bad. There are three women in this novel and they are all good. The one man was good but had "emotional flaws" that a good woman, babies and the Cook Islands put to rights. Her characterisation way below that of Le Carre, Deighton or Littell - hard stares and knowing looks made up for insight. All this reminded me of a comment by Ken Follett when he was discussing writing with Hanif Kureishi. The upshot was Hanif's ... Read More:

If Jack Reacher and Jack Ryan could have a baby, it would to Mitch Rapp!!!!! . I was a great plot, well balanced and believable. The characters were easy to relate to and there was no messing about with silly subplots. The action came thick and fast, the ending was simple but left you feeling content and wanting the next novel ASAP.............It's time to read the back catalogue!

I've been a Cussler fan for over 30 years and have hugely enjoyed most of his books but this was a real stinker. The science regarding the hurricane generator was nonsense and it felt like it had been sponsored by ESSO or George Bush. Perhaps I'm just getting too old for this stuff...

I loved the book the Righteous men and after finishing it went and bought the Last Testament. Although I loved the first book, the second did nothing for me. This book had blown me away. I just cant put it down.

Well worth a read.

I watched the TV show and thought is was good. so i then bought the book and watched the show again and realised it misses out at least half of the actual story and some of the chracters names are wrong. i advise everyone to read the book as it is 100 times better than the TV show.

"The Devil's Alternative" is a spy thriller from the end of the 1970's. The story pits the Russian leader (modeled somewhat on Leonid Brezhnev) against the American President (modeled somewhat on Lyndon Johnson) in a world crisis situation. At the same time the story is very European in that it is the British who just happen to have a spy with access to the Russian Politburo meetings. Also, most of the scenes that do not take place in the White House or the Kremlin take place in Europe.

The story is very exciting, although somewhat unrealistic. As usual, the good guys are trying to prevent World War III while the "hawks" in both the Kremlin and the White House can hardly wait to get going. The ending is somewhat contrived but on the whole the book is a very good read.
