i have only done a couple of the suggested walks and the detail is extraordinary. Also, the hints of how to arrive at the starting point helped me alot. and the fact that some of the walks are exactly what a outdoors enthusiast is after...namely the lesser known walks.

I bought this book hoping for a departure from the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide type of guide. Going by the other two reviews here I felt the Blue Guide would fit the bill exactly. Sadly, I sent it back as it was unsuitable for our planned trip as it centres pretty heavily on the historical, writing in fantastic detail about the Roman ruins etc. but for us, way too much. It is also very dense and almost impenatratable if you just want a casual look-see over a cup of coffee. Ho-hum, back to the Rough Guide with regret.

I've just returned from 5 days in Sicily, where I visited Erice, Agrigento and Palermo and some other parts of the west coast. For these areas, I found the book very useful and informative, in particular the Palermo section. As usual it was set out well and was easily to use. I imagine the other sections are just as useful. The only thing it didn't mention was that while it might be the best beach in Sicily, the rocks behind are yielded some of our major break throughs in understanding climate change! I would reccomend this book and prefer the layout to the rough guides I have used for other places in the past

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this guide. It is easy to understand describing each town/region and giving suggestions of what to see. For both sun lover and culture seeker it is an essential piece of "holiday reading", giving detailed information, whilst being small and easy to carry with you. The island comes to life with the descriptions allowing the reader to get a "feel" for the island. I haven't yet been to Sicily but feel I know it well. When I do visit in the summer I know that I shall feel I know the island and the people intimately.

This map was not as accurate with road numbers as we were expecting. We got lost twice on our ten day holiday and both times went some kilometres out of our way, specifically near Piazza Armerina, (where the S117b in reality crosses the S191 at a great height and there is no direct junction) and Caltagirone (where there is a non-existent road marked on the map parallel to the S124 north of the town)

The book is very helpful and full of useful travel titbits when travelling round Sicily, pointing out interesting features of each of the main regions and recommended places to visit. The walking tour in Palermo was excellent, and the beaches highlighted were exceptional. The restaurant recommendations were fantastic, though the great hotel we stayed in was not mentioned in the guide, despite there only being a few hotels in the town itself. You will need, however, to supplement the book with a language guide if you do not speak Italian, as it contains only the most basic phrases, and it would be helpful to expand on these when required. Furthermore, a more detailed map or sat-nav should be used to travel around, rather than relying ... Read More:

Sketchy and hastily put together. Despite having been updated several times, this guidebook still gets the orientation of Corso Vittorio Emmanuele in Palermo wrong. It does not run north to south. This is based on an Italian publication so there's really no excuse. It also doesn't tell you how to get from the airport to Palermo. The photos are ok though.
