This is a fantastic little book packed with all the information required to safety embark on your first alpine peak. The contents are divided into somewhat arbitrary headings, sorted into alphabetical order, but will tell you where to go, what to take up the mountain, and very importantly, good easy to follow rule of thumb information about the ropework required to cross glaciers and climb the peaks. Informative and inspiring.

It's a great idea to collect the best ridges in Scotland into one book and it turns out there isn't space for them all in this one book - the appendix lists another 40 odd (mainly climbs). The book is written with a marvelous energy and joie de vivre that really draws you in; the maps are great and the photos too. It's a lovely book. I am a walker, not a climber, and, despite the subtitle, there are many routes in here suitable for reasonably experienced hillwalkers with a good head for heights. Do the winter routes as summer walks and Creise, Ring of Steall, Aonach Eagach, Liathach and many others become accessible to us mortals. Some additional route planning to cut out short climbing sections also opens up a number of the other routes given. ... Read More:

Since attending one of Andy's talks, which probably one of the most well paced and entertaining presentations I've been to I've eagerly awaited his book. Reading some of the pitches described on the Wall I had to put the book down from time to time and walk about the room as I could feel my own fearometer building towards overload, so well does Andy paint the picture. I also thoroughly enjoyed how the main theme was interwoven with Andy's own history and development as a climber and as a person. Great relief to the rest of us weekend rock warriors that even the greats are never too far away from the trouser filler either :-) Well done Andy

This book is a great overview for those planning trips to the high alps. The coverage is thourough, complete with detailled maps, route descriptions, objective dangers and the other worthwhile routes on each of the 4000m mountains of the Alps (Only the easiest routes to each summit are fully explained). The book could be used on its own without other guidebooks, however it is best used as a backup to the excellent Alpine club guidebooks which describe all routes in an area including those under 4000m. The pictures are excellent and will make any mountaineer reach for thier ice axe.

The book is well-written. The images illustrating a rope-work are big, colored and easily understandable. Overall, it is a great rope-work guide, covering all necessary aspects of the matter in a consistent, logical way. I really enjoyed reading it. Besides, the book is a pocket-size, so I used to take it with me when I travel (together with a piece of rope for practicing :).

Im sure this is all good modern info but just be aware that it is in a very American style. For example, there is the usual mix-up of units: oz of gel and lbs of water per pound of body weight. The section on foods is about all gels and powders and is actually quite funny because the author is so serious about 'performance'. If you use a figure of eight descender and eat GORP (good ol raisins and peanuts apparently) then this is not the book for you.
