I fail to see the connection between this book and Sunday Lunch as an institution, and I never noticed Gordon campaigning for its 'revival' on any other platform than in this book (unlike Jamie Oliver, who gets a bee in his bonnet about e.g. school dinners but does follow it through).
The idea of creating 3 course menus and setting out a schedule of what to prepare when are very helpful, but leafing through it I didn't find that many recipes that the average family would happily select to cook and eat for Sunday lunch - pan seared foie gras? curried monkfish? clams with aioli? Bet the kids would love that! They look and sound lovely, and as a confident cook I'd have no qualms about attempting most of them, but as the basis of a 'campaign' ... Read More:

I have admired Marcus Wareing as a chef from taking over at the Savoy Grill and Petrus. He was also exposed to a wider audience during the Great British Menu series for the Queen's birthday.

But for this book I agree that we needed a return to basic about things in some ways and the writing style here is not patronising and the illustrations are very helpful. What makes this book different is the 'All is not lost' section so that if you do end up overpoaching at egg, undercook pork or fish, then he puts together recipes or tips which are speedy and life saving in situations that you could imagine you would need a quick resolution like a dinner party you're cooking for with people who's opinions matter to you. I have nabbed this book from my ... Read More:

My friend Mike Walter reckons this is the only cook book he will have in his kitchen (even if he claims Mr Hix is not quite spot on with his Yorkshire pud; well I wouldn't know).
Still, if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
And even if there's a bit too much salad and gooseberries for my taste , there's more than enough to remind you that there is decent food outside Bangladesh.

Mmmm. wash it down with a nice warm flat beer.

This isn't a cookbook for the faint-hearted. It is a genuine restaurant book that gives you the precise recipes for some of David's most famous dishes.
The instructions are clear and, much more importantly, they work. David's use of seasonal, British produce and wild ingredients makes for one of the most interesting and pleasing books around. I can't recommend this book and everything I have ever made from it has blown people away.

It's a gorgeous book. No one will say anything less.

Most recipes are quite difficult or expensive for the home Chef, but this is a great insight into a 3 star Chef.

I say difficult because plenty of the recipes take a long time to cook and are very laborious, but 3 star cooking won't be easy.

I say expensive because truffles, foie gras and similar products pop up in Gordon's recipes quite frequently.

This cookbook manages to balance our expectations of a Michelin starred chef and the actual capability of most readers. I know that there are a lot of books out there by Michelin star chefs (normally debut books) which attempt to give an insight into the delicate nature of Michelin starred cooking. This book has the following pros/helpful aspects:

- Good mixture of complex and simple recipes;
- Catalogue of how to make 'basics'/store cupboard essentials, like stocks etc.
- Beautiful, colourful and ample illustration where you may need inspiration for how to present the recipes or food in general;
- Classification system of difficulty;
- Good mixture of slow recipes and what I would call on the hob cooking
- Balance of fish, meat, desserts ... Read More:

As Masterclasses go, the book is fine. However, there is not much insight to the programme. If you want this, buy "My Father Could Only Boil Cornflakes" by this year's winner Peter Bayless. As well as good easy to follow recipes, it gives a real insight to the programme, and, what we did not know, and should have done.
