I bought this book a few weeks before going on a 10 day holiday to rome and found it incredibly helpful. As well as giving lots of information on the more popular attractions such as st peters and the colosseum, there is an extensive amount of information on the lesser known, but equally as impressive sights. As well as showing rome area by area, the Rome at a Glance section is brilliant as it gives a short list of the top attractions, then goes on to list the best churches, fountains, museums, etc. Altogether a brilliant book to have with you whatever your doing and wherever you are in rome.

This is a surprisingly poor book - unusually for Lonely Planet it is split into themes e.g. "eating", "history" rather than places. This makes finding relevant information tedious - not that there is that much really useful information. You might expect the guide to tell you how to get to Rome by train and how long the journey would take - prepare to be disappointed. The title is also misleading - I bourght the book for a holiday on the Amalfi coast: this area is dealt with in 1 small chapter, and seems to be an after-thourght. The consequence is that I need to buy another book.... Poor effort - I would avoid this book

Reading this novel, one is reminded of the classic Monty Python scene in' Life of Brian' where when asked "What have the Romans done for us?" one of the rebels answers "Aquaducts." Harris' impressive research teaches us all about them set against the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. Pompeii itself is rather a minor character in this thinly plotted story. Enjoyable enough but ultimately forgettable.

Sketchy and hastily put together. Despite having been updated several times, this guidebook still gets the orientation of Corso Vittorio Emmanuele in Palermo wrong. It does not run north to south. This is based on an Italian publication so there's really no excuse. It also doesn't tell you how to get from the airport to Palermo. The photos are ok though.

Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.
