I don't normally buy recipe books without looking inside to see if they whet my appetite. But I'd read the reviews for this on the .com website so took the plunge as we have had a panini maker for over a year now and have been struggling with variations. This is a lovely quality book with fabulous pictures. The downside is that it requires specific Italian ingredients, particularly the types of ham and cheese so you will need to be able to visit an Italian deli if you want to be authentic and make use of all the ideas. But the upside is that it gives good tips on how to make a great panini ie put the cheese on the top so when it melts it drips down through the other ingredients and also to cut the top off the ciabatta ... In many ways there is great information in this book. It's a bit dry and a little dated but it is very thorough in terms of the information that it contains. i.e. if you want to start a sandwich bar then it is certainly a good start. It provides a worthwhile road map to help you get open. There is a lot of advice on the tedious but essential stuff like dealing with your EHO, insurance agents, surveyors etc. You even get little sections on stakeholder pensions and walkie talkies. My issue with it is that it really the story of one man opening a sandwich bar. i.e. it is based on a very limited experience and very specific factors. This book is very well presented, with lovely pictures and various recipes (open sandwiches, closed sandwiches, bread recipes, sauces recipes, bar snacks recipes and biscuit recipes). The problem however is that most recipes require you to make a special dressing made of a long list of herbs and ingredients not necessarily available in your standard supermarket and making the dressing itself requires quite a lot of time. I have tried two recipes and it took me close to three hours to prepare the sandwiches. Which were delicious I concede but you don't want to go through that much hassle just to make sandwiches. So all in all: a nice book which turns out to be disappointing.

J'Adore Nigella, but if you have watched any over her christmas specials over the last two years, downloaded the recipies from the BBC website, or even purchased 'Feast' in the past, then chances are you will be familar with most of the recipies in this book. Yes she has tweeked a few, modified a few intros and added a few recipies, but none the less a recap of her holiday ideas from the last 3+ years. This is the book i was scammering for 2 years ago when Nigella's Christmas first aired on the BBC. But all my moaning aside, it's the perfect book to get geared up for a hearty christmas.
