I've never seen such tempting food on a book cover...I just longed to eat it at once! The recipes are all of a high standard, and the photography glorious. I have to admit that I have not warmed to the authors to anything like the same degree: their personal anecdotes seemed smug and self congratulatory, and I won't be booking a holiday with them! The excellent recipes are frequently fairly complex and time consuming, with many stages in each dish, and the book is probably one for the more experienced cook and not for a novice

This is a great place to start with mediterranean cookery. The recipes are easy to follow and sound delicious. The food is put into a social and historical context too. I immediately spotted the recipe for drunken figs (substituting dried figs for fresh and port for brandy) to make for a party I was attending the day I got the book. They were delicious and went down very well with my friends. You will be well rewarded by this book - it has prompted me to buy Paola Gavin's other cookbooks too.

Wow! What can I say. This book has to have some of the most inspirational vegetarian recipes I have ever seen. I've just had great reactions at a dinner party to the Oyster Mushrooms in Ginger Butter that I cooked from a recipe in this book, and I have to agree with them. The recipes are not necessarily the quickest to prepare, but if they all taste as good as the mushrooms, then the extra time taken to put them together will be worth it. Since buying this book, my plans for this year now include a trip to Cork to sample the delights of this restaurant.

Just what I was looking for: healthy recipe ideas for packed lunches and light evening meals that don't require too many fancy ingredients or time to put together (the pitta pocket fillers are handy). I'm not really a dessert person, but the quick, tasty recipes have made me realise I don't have to be baking pastry and doing fiddly toppings for hours. If you love spending time in the kitchen this book is NOT for you!

How brilliant that grub street republished this book. I was given it a present. Full of fantastic, authentic recipes and background info on the cuisine & culture - a refreshing cookery book. great for veggies and non veggies alike... All the recipes are really well written, easy to follow and moreover utterly delicious....I am a fan and cant wait for the next book to be released.

If you're bored of mashed potato or boiled carrots, this book will provide you with plenty of ideas on how to prepare vegetables in a new, original way. I have tried many lovely dishes from this book; my favourites are the carrots boiled in cream and basil (absolutely delicious), the layered potato and tomato pie, celery risotto, chard and mushroom fettucine (I've never liked chard very much and I loved this dish!), the orange and fennel salad, lentil soup with butternut squash and fennel, the pear, parmesan and celery salad, and many more. All ingredients are easy to find in your local shop and rely on good quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar to bring out the tatste of the vegetables rather than soaking them in tons of mayonnaise or salad dressing. I bought this book years ago, eight to be precise, and it has travelled with me to India and Dubai constantly being used to the point I need to cover it with plastic it is so messed up. I enjoyed cooking the dishes I have tasted all over Asia. My only criticism is that I wanted to be able to index the recipes with the hindi names for dishes from this country but it hardly matters. I have copied recipes to give to friends who have never heard of some of the food and they too have had fun cooking new flavours.I dont need pictures - I love to experiment listening to sounds the names of the veg and spices. Who needs meat with these kinds of recipes to hand.
